3rd Brake light
Anyone know where i can find a 3rd brake light assembly for a 92 firebird? GM has discontinued the part and I have to pass inspection this month. Any help would be greatly apprectiated. Thanks.
I'll mention that i've been using a screw to hold 1 contact to the bulb because one of the plastic tabs broke a while back. I've bent them in to make them tight at least for the moment and wiggled the buld around, but the light never works. Could the contacts in the socket be dirty? And if so is there away to clean the contacts or would that not be the problem?

Those things are notorious for that. Check ebay or http://members.***.net/thirdgenusa/t...amaroparts.htm He gets them from time to time.
Check out item #140121808785 on ebay. It is an LED conversion.

Last time I checked, the 3rd brake lights weren't REQUIRED for an inspection. So, if it was out, they couldn't fail you for that. The left & right tail lights (brake lights) are part of the inspection guidelines.

Re: 3rd Brake light
In a lot of states it has to work if it came on the car. I was given a ticket one time because my third brake light was out. I thought it didn't matter because the others worked. He told me ALL brake lights that came on the car have to work.

I wonder if I take the whole housing out, maybe then they can't fail me. ??
It's very upsetting that they can discontinue a part you need to pass a STATE inspection.

Re: 3rd Brake light
One thing to remember is that if its like my 89 the hatch has to be closed for the third light to work. There are contacts that touch when closed. If this is the case make sure these contacts are clean. Also you could solder a jumper wire to the bulb, not the best solution but it would get you working until you could find a replacement.
Hawks could probably get you one, or try the junk yards or ebay.

The 91-92s have a stretch cord that runs from the light to the trim piece that covers the hatch hinge area. It doesn't have the contacts near the latch.
