Cluster Swap

Yeah, I read the instructions for swapping the 145 IROC into a base model. I pretty much tried to follow the instructions to a T, but I still have some questions.

My speedometer doesn't work. I'm pretty sure I lined up the new speedometer cable (removed the cruise control), and I do believe that it's lined up both on the transmission and the cluster. No dice.

On the cluster, how deep does the cable have to go onto the cluster? Mine JUST doesn't clip onto the speedometer, but it's on really damn snug, so I'm hoping that might work???

And the RPM doesn't work, I drove it up and down the street, and once it reset itself to zero, but then nothing happened. Just sat there.

My, the gauge near the tachometer (bottom right) went insane and is sitting around 400.

No read on the battery, no read on oil pressure.

AND YES I FOLLOWED THE INSTRUCTIONS.

Re: Cluster Swap

I am not a car genious, but maybe you have an electrical cable instead of mechanical? I know that if its not mechanical the speedo wont work.

Iding the year of car is helpful. If the cable (one-piece?) is seated in both the driven gear (transmission) and the speedo head, you should get movement unless the cable is broken. The cable should be seated in the head far enough so that the 'clip' on the rear of the head engages it and keeps it in place. There's usually enough slack in the cable so that you can pull it toward the dash a bit.

Re: Cluster Swap

I decided to put in the old cluster, and reseated the speedo cable, so that's fine now. I'll go under the transmission to check that one tonight. The old cluster didn't accomodate the new 1 piece one, by the looks of things, wouldn't seat properly, this one gets under the clip, and it has wiggle room (can slide along the "stud" for the cable.

But now the instruments won't work, gas level, battery, oil, temp, they're all wrong. Why would this be? I'll be damned if it's not seated right, but I could pretty much guarantee you that the cluster is seated correctly on the electrical clips.

PS - can anyone tell me what the different colors of bulbs mean? (green/black)

Re: Cluster Swap

My guess would be that it's not contacting the dash side of the cluster harness correctly, or possibe that one or more of the grounds has moved, been slightly bent to where it not making a good connection. I had that issue with mine and had to take a screw driver and slightly bend them to make a bigger arc.

As for the bulbs.. I think they are different wattages/number ( 194,160 ) for different color

Re: Cluster Swap

So you mean it's not contacting the pugs properly that go into the cluster?

Weird, I just put in my old base-model cluster and THAT one doesn't even work. I made perfectly sure that it's in there, all nicely tight and secure. My MAIN concern in the tachometer, seeing as that she doesn't work. Is there any way I can focus my sights on that one? Is there some fuses I can check first, or something simple like that? I really don't want to mess around more than I have to...
