92 Camaro vats lock cylinder

One of the two white wires broke. I taped it up and seem to be okay for awhile. Now its causing problems with the car. I know how to replace the lock cylinder. But don't know what else I need to do for everything to work right. I assume that I will need to get the resistance reading from my key. Get a new key blank with that resistance. Then get that key cut to the new key that comes with the lock cylinder?

Is this what needs to be done or is that wrong way?

i went to a locksmith with my old key and the key that came with the lock cylinder and had the guy measure the resistance and then cut the new key into a blanck with the same resistance as the old key. It worked great.
