replacing steering wheel
I just wanted to make sure before I go out and buy everything, to check if this is the right kit. I want to replace my stock steering wheel in my '91 Camaro with a Grant Touring GT steering wheel. I've called Grant's tech line, and they wouldn't give me any input because my car is equiped with an airbag. But from what I've read on this site is that you can replace....even though it isn't legal. Is part number GRT-3196 at SR the right part to use?
Thanks
JV

Re: replacing steering wheel
Sorry I dont have any input, but I have a question too.
I wanted to replace my steering wheel when I first got the car. However, a few of my buddies discouraged me by telling me that removing an airbag is a law and it is punishable by a $10,000 fine. I'm sure if I got pulled over, the cop wouldnt know the difference because the majority of these cars didnt come with airbags in the 80's. However, I didnt want to take the off chance that there might be a cop that is a 3rd gen fan and might know that my car came with an airbag.
Is it true that the fine is 10,000? I really dont feel comfortable with that airbag there, because I have heard of them injuring people in mild fender-benders (especially back when airbag technology was new!)

Re: replacing steering wheel
I feel your pain, both of you. Awhile back I asked the same questions here:
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/inte...arket-non.html
I want to do this because an airbag system this old is more of a safety hazard than a safety feature, in my opinion. The standard rule of thumb appears to be to replace the airbag system after 14 years, but as far as I can tell, this isn't even possible. The only replacements I could find were take-offs from parts cars, and were just as old as the one I already have.
In terms of the legalities, I suppose I'm a lot less concerned with being "caught" and fined, than I am with the fact that it's illegal to sell a car with the airbag removed. They tightened up these laws after scumbag used car dealers would remove and sell the airbag, then sell the car with a false airbag cover, making it appear as if the airbag was intact. This isn't quite the same, since this isn't any attempt to defraud anyone, but naturally the law doesn't have to rely on common sense and reason...
I'm getting ready to rearrange my garage, which will permit me to pull the Camaro apart and leave it, so if I get a chance to work this out, I'll post what I find and hopefully we can figure this out.

Re: replacing steering wheel
You know, it seems to me this would be a lot more commonplace as a result of guys converting their cars to race-only setups... I wonder if Grant would help if you, uh, suggested that your intent was off-road use?
Re: replacing steering wheel
The install kit you have picked is 3 bolt and the steering wheel is 5 bolt. To use that wheel I think you need install kit GRT-5196

I just ordered this hub and will post if it fits my 92 camaro with a 5 bolt steering wheel.

Re: replacing steering wheel
I want to replace it cause the grip on my wheel is falling apart, and I can't see paying $520 at Hawks for another one, when I can get a better looking wheel for a 1/4 of the cost.
Jerrywho, please let me know if that part works.
