90 IROC, aftermarket non-airbag steering wheel

After concluding I should remove my wife's original airbag steering wheel (based on the average lifespan of airbag systems being about 14 years, and considering this one is pushing 18 years), and after discovering that it's nearly impossible to find a new replacement airbag steering wheel at any price, let alone a reasonable price, I decided to look for aftermarket steering wheels.

And then I realized I have no idea what to look for when it comes to replacing a steering wheel. LOL

So... I'm looking for some recommendations for the easiest bolt-on replacement. I did some quick searching and found some people were able to make Momo wheels work with some effort, but I guess I really have two questions:

1. What measurements, dimensions, and other factors do I need to take into consideration for proper fitment?

2. What are some recommendations for brands, and/or sites that sell steering wheels that will fit?

If you want to keep the stock wheel you can call Hawks they sell air bag caps. And the good thing is they are non-functional. 1761-2DR pn

Good info there, I've never owned one with airbags but one of these days I will and would probably end up ditching it anyhow, mainly just want to have radio controls more easily accessable for a dd

I appreciate it, but her stock wheel is also about 18 years old and is looking pretty awful. Now that we have all new suspension, braking, rear-end, engine, and transmission in the car, the interior is just about the only remaining parts to replace, and I'd like to go with something completely new.

Still, if I can't find anything, I'll definitely check out Hawks.

I sent my '90 steering wheel to American Stitches in Texas and had it recovered in leather. Looked great and kept the stock look and the airbag.

grant has some nice stuff, and you can get horn caps with bowties, etc. they sell adapter kits with the wheels for different makes and different horn caps. should about a little shy of 200 depending on the wheel. check it out http://www.grantproducts.com

looks like they have airbag stuff too...

Extend the wires coming off the airbags, stand back, touch wires to a 9 volt battery.

Re: 90 IROC, aftermarket non-airbag steering wheel

Grant's airbag stuff is just add-ons for existing airbag wheels. In fact, this is their statement about airbag wheels:

We do not research airbag-equipped vehicles and our kits are not engineered for such vehicles. We do not recommend that you change, alter or remove the airbag from any vehicle for safety and legal reasons.
No manufacturer is going to outright tell you, "This non-airbag wheel fits your airbag car." I'm pretty sure it's illegal to remove/disable the airbag system, because god forbid anybody keep a car more than 14 years after the manufacture date. Or, horror of horrors, drive a car without an airbag at all. Unimaginable!

That's why I asked what I need to know to determine correct fit.

I'm going to take a shot at using a Momo wheel with the Thunder Racing adapter...

You need to be more creative than that. Put it in a bucket of pudding or inside a watermelon, then set it off
