4th gen console

How hard is it to install a 4th gen trans am console into a 1992 camaro? Does it look good? Any cutting required? I found a whole console, in mint condition for 200 dollars, and it will work with my 6 speed because its the 6 speed console...

Re: 4th gen console

Ok I did some searching and I heard somewhere that it is best to get a 98-02 console, instead of the one i have found which is out of a 95... I know I need a bird radio pod out of a third gen... Anything else really? Also, If i go with the 95 console, how hard is it to fab up a plate to cover the gap?

Re: 4th gen console

I dont understand why you would want to do this. Our consoles are sweet looking. But to each his own. 4th gen leather seats, now this I understand. but console? Door panels, This things are what make a thirdgen a thirdgen. Dont fix what aint broke, imho.

Re: 4th gen console

$200 is way too much. I've been able to get a mint 6 speed one for myself for $75 shipped and one for my brother for $110 shipped. I wouldn't go over $125 shipped.

There should be no gap with a 3rd gen dash or 3rd gen firebird radio pod. I don't have one on my 92 firebird. The 4th gen dash in the 86, I do have a small gap, but nothing a little spacer or padding under the carpet wouldn't fix. Thats the 97-02 console.

The 93-96 consoles won't have the cupholders in the rear which will allow you to fold down the rear seat completely. 97-02 hits the rear seats when they are folded down.

The console bolts are in the same spot as the thirdgen console, easy upgrade except if you have power windows you will have to fab up something for the switches.

Keep up the modding...

Re: 4th gen console

I concur, I have an automatic center console from a 2002 Trans Am in my 87 Trans Am. And its worth the swap specially if you don't plan on keeping your car stock interior wise. I had to fab my own radio pod, but thats because I have an automatic. I have some pics in my CarDomain. I also agree with Firebat $200 is way too much. I got mine for $75 mint too...

Re: 4th gen console

ok this isn't that old so i don't feel bad bringing it back...but i just got mine for $15 in mint condition, lol. It's automatic but if that junk yard had the 5/6 speed it would have been the same. Keep you eyes open...they are out there!

Got a question tho for you HCR13 and whomever else did this swap. I've done the research so save that comment...i have nothing but a bare interior right now because i'm prepping to paint...so the interior is stripped. I set the console in there and it looks a bit retchad (sp). Then again i don't have the radio pod and the carpet in there, but right now there seems to be an inch gap all the way around...will that be cured by the carpet and radio pod? I can't seem to find any threads that say you have to trim anything to make it fit better whether in a firebird radio pod or the center console itself. All i keep reading is that yes they will fit and yes they use the same bolt holes in the back and apparently the radio pod holds it in the front. I believe this goes right along with your thread BRODBAND as far as if there is any trimming, otherwise sorry for hijacking your thread. Thanks

Re: 4th gen console

IN a 85-92 Firebird this is a direct swap (with a Manual console) and should only take 5 minutes. A auto console is a little more work, and I have not done one myself, Yet.

To do this in a Camaro (or 82-84 Firebird as well) since those cars have a 1 piece center console/radio pod section is a lot of work to make it look good, and not like a hack job In My Opinion.

I have done it in an 87 Iroc (sorry no finished pics, Long Story as to why) But what I ended up doing was cutting pieces off of the old broken original console to fill in holes in the dash, and the top of the Firebird radio pod I used. The best piece I think I made for it was I cut out a Piece that fit into the top of the Firebird radio pod, then I also used a piece of the stock carpet off the original console, and cut it to fit so that it looked like it belonged there, like a shelf, instead of just a hole.

Also since the 97+ console I installed into the Iroc had 1 Power Point and 1 Lighter (which I just call a 2nd power point, cause I don't smoke) I moved the Original Hatch release to the dash where the stock Lighter was, again I had cut the part to fit, but it turned out looking factory.

And I used a piece of plexi to put the Original power window switched in the console ash tray, and kept the cover so that it could open and close when not in use.

All in All I would probably NOT do it again in a 82-92 Camaro or 82-84 Firebird, Due to the amount of work it takes to make it look correct and like it belongs there. But I would definatley do it to another 85-92 Firebird in an instant.

Re: 4th gen console

you will need a firebird radio pod, which will just about have to be purchased from the dealer.
you wont find a good one in a yard around pensacola.
200 is a rape on the console, although locally, thats the best price you are gonna find.
boneyards are high around here.
online/ebay is your bet bet, josh.

Its also the worst part of the 4th gens. Replacing a broken part with a newer broken part makes no sense.
