145mph solution

I think I have found somewhat of a solution to our 145 mph woes: Like so many of us I searched far and wide for a working instrument cluster from a 90-92 Z-28, before finally giving up and sending Hawk's $300. I went to the trouble of installing that culster only to find the Tach and speedo were both dead. Frustrating but Hawk's promptly refunded my money. I was completely unable to find another one... I used a parts finder website, but every time I got a reply I would call and some dude in India would tell me he didn't know if he had a 110 or 145 cluster, and couldn't find out because he was in a call center, not a junk yard.

well I finally found http://www.dnaspeedometers.com/ online. They said they could rebuild a cluster for $149 with a 1 yr warranty. I called Hawk's back and they sold me the broken cluster for $75, so after all I came out $75 ahead and a few hrs labor behind. DNA was easy to work with and they set the mileage to match my original odometer. So for everybody looking for a Z28 cluster this seems a lot easier than looking high and low for a working one. Hope this helps some people.

Some of you may also get a laugh from this. I finally called one parts warehouse who had a working cluster from a 92 Z28, $131. I was speaking to yet another gentleman who did not sound like a native english speaker. He pulled the part from the shelf and said we were good to go, then said. "oh I'm sorry sir, this one says 140mph." I tried to make him understand that the highest number on the face is 140, but we refer to it as 145 because there is another small tic mark above the 140. His english was so poor he couldn't grasp this and refused to ship it, because he was sure I would just return and demand a refund since it wasn't a "145 mph." so he missed a sale and I missed a great deal.

I got a fully functional speedo off of Ebay for a litle over $100. Paid $15 to get the odometer changed.

I found out you can reset the odo yourself - you just need to keep track of all the little screws.

Re: 145mph solution

Thats great to know about the odo. I'd like to see details sometime. Hopefully no one will abuse it.

I'm glad you found a good deal. I looked repeatedly and everytime I found one one ebay it said "as is" and they couldn't guarantee it worked.

Even if it doesn't work - a good speedo shop can fix it for cheap - especially if you know somebody who can give you a discount. Bottom line is a good price on Ebay + speedo repair/adjustment is much cheaper than $300 for one bought at Hawks that is used and needs to be adjusted anyway.

In fact, when I took my speedo to the shop the tech showed me a brand new or refurbished one they had sitting on the shelf.
