courtesy light troubles

Can anyone help me? 89 Formula 350. Dome light, and floor lights will not go out. I had to remove the bulbs so they wont drain the battery. I changed the door PIN switches and even replaced the dash dimmer switch. to no avail.

Re: courtesy light troubles

this is a very strange situation. I would get a test light and check to see if power is going throug hthe door pin switches even when they are closed, if they are working properly then there is most likely a wire touching behind the dimmer switch that shouldn't be, I think there is a wiring diagram for headlight switch assemblies in the haynes manual.

In firebirds is there a seperate dimmer switch as opposed to camaros that use the headlight switch for both?

Re: courtesy light troubles

The dimmer switch should be the same on both cars. "head light and park lights on a rocker switch with the dimmer and dome on a wheel". I have tried to follow wires with a "short finder" to no avail. the Haynes manual was a help. The door PIN switches are new. The only thing i didn't do yet was remove the A pillar molding and headlinear to see if the dome light wire is rubbing. Thank you, Jim.

Re: courtesy light troubles

I would still test both door switches just to narrow it down to the dimmer switch

Re: courtesy light troubles

If it helps, the door pin switches make a ground connection (-), not a positive connection (+). When door is open, the ground is made for the lamps, when door closed, the ground is disrupted.

Re: courtesy light troubles

trace the wires for the lamp and stick a multimeter from the bulb wire to the other wires if you get a voltage across two different wires theres your culprit it couldnt be a short because a short would cause your bulb not to work right?
