Looking for Hatch Shade. Help!

Greetings all. Nice forum you have here.

I recently saw a 91 Firebird (5.0 formula?) with a very nice hatch shade installed. It was pure black, perhaps freshly dyed, without a single scratch or tear. It literally looked brand new. I walked perhaps 50 feet from the car, and he ran out of a store, jumped in an sped off before I could ask him about it.

Is somebody making aftermarket hatch shades? I'd love to get one. I have some junk in my hatch that I'd prefer for the world not to see.

My '90 Firebird (3.0 base, power nothing lol) didn't come with one when I bought it from the original owner, nor do I think it was purchased as an option and lost. I spoke with a few people at Young's Fbody and Hawk's Third Gen, but as unable to locate any leads on a new one. From what they said, I'd likely have to replace a few interior plastics to accomodate a used OEM shade.

I suppose a louver is always an option, but the shade looked too darn cool. Anybody have any ideas?

Re: Looking for Hatch Shade. Help!

You are correct that if your car didn't come with that option, then you'll have to change some of the interior plastics - specifically, the two side pieces and the piece up next to the hatch glass where the shade attaches when extended.

I was lucky and found one, though discontinued, through my local GM dealer. They found other dealers who still had one or two on their shelves and gave me their phone numbers. The it was up to me to call them and order the shade. You may not be as lucky as I did this a year or two after I bought the car (about 1999).

Another option aside from those you've tried already might be House of Camaro. I understand they are very good to deal with. Probably even get the plastic pieces you need there too.
