Hey,
I have a Auto 1990 RS and need to replace the shift plate but I can't get the **** off the shift assembly in order to both remove the old shift plate and install the new one....

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Re: Auto Shift ****

There is a metal staple type fastener that holds the shift **** onto the shaft. If you look on the front of the leather area there should be a piece of metal sticking out. Get a screwdriver between the leather and the metal and pry it out and then pull the assembly off the shaft.

Re: Auto Shift ****

The staple faces the radio and is easy to get out. A small flathead will do the trick.

Re: Auto Shift ****

I'll try that. I know what you're talking about but when I looked there (before I asked this question) there wasn't a staple there was a hole there and inside was a plastic looking piece that doesn't seem to move. I'v tried twisting or pulling on the **** but it doesn't give. I'll have to give another look at that particular area.

Re: Auto Shift ****

Just wanted to let you know I got the thing off. I was trying to twist it, but then decided to pull straight up and it came off. There was no staple in it, I guess it is just missing,
Thanks for the help

No problem. You can find that staple on your next trip to the j yards. Regals have them also.
