Power Window Won't Lift

Afternoon, All...

I asked a while back how to get the door card off the drivers side door so I could investigate a problem with my power window.

When I pressed the button, the window shot down into the door like a brick. Pressing the button to raise the window, it came up enough for me to grab the window and assist the window up. Once up, it stayed up. However, we were en route to a car show, so the window went back down, and stayed down until it was time to drive home. When I tried to put it up after the show, it wouldn't move, and only makes grinding and thumping noises when the button is pressed. Suffice to say, it was a long, cold drive home.

I pulled the door card, but having never had to deal with power window issues before, I didn't know what to look for, what to fiddle with, etc. I put the door card on, and haven't had time to ask about it since.

What are possible causes of this? What would I need to look for, and perhaps more importantly, what would I need to replace. How does one get into the motor/window bay....? Inside my door, there's a lot of sheet steel between me and the window/motor assembly. Is that removable? Where would one get replacement parts (if I need any)?

Thanks in advance!
Cheers,
AR

Re: Power Window Won't Lift

I don't know what's causing your problem, but when you pull the door panel off, the window motor is in the bottom front corner. It's held on by rivets. The gear on the motor moves a cam that is connected to the window guide mechanism. This is a tech article about replacing the motor https://www.thirdgen.org/powerwindows. There is another about adjusting the windows for fit, too. And, no, you can't take the metal off unless you want to weld it back. There are pictures of opened up doors on here that I'm sure you'll find if you search.
