Question about light on gauge cluster
Question about light on gauge cluster
I have an 84' Berlinetta Camaro and there is a light that keeps coming on on my dash. It looks like a battery, with an arrow pointing down toward water - it sits directly below the wiper fluid light (and two lights below the check engine light). I have looked in the manual, but am not seeing anything regarding this particular light.
We have added coolant, gas and transmission fluid, but the light will not go out.
Can someone please let me know what this is?

Can't say for sure because I've never seen that particular light, but it may be that water needs to be added to the battery. Older style batteries needed water to be added occasionally, and maybe that system monitors the water level in the battery somehow. How old is the battery?

Maybe wiper fluid? If it's pointed below the wiper fluid light?

I think that might be a low coolant light. Never seen one light up on our cars. My car has the emblem in the cluster but there is no bulb in the cluster and no sensor in the radiator.

The battery doesnt have a sensor in it for a light to light up on the dash. I've never seen one.

Sounds like the low coolant symbol. Does it look like this?

On my GTA, the coolant level sensor is on the passenger side radiator tank, just under the heater hose outlet. I'm not sure if it's in the same place on the berlinetta setup, but you might try looking there.

Ward 'nailed it' ! That light is for the coolant level. The sensor is located right where Ward described it and the wire is Yellow with Black stripe. It sounds as if the sensor is not plugged in.

Yes, make sure the connection is good and fluid is above the line. If light is still on, the sensor could have gone bad or possibly a wire problem.

Re: Question about light on gauge cluster
Just for clarification, I offered the battery as a possibility when the OP said it "looks like a battery" assuming the light looked like the battery icon on our dashes, not simply a rectangle. Also, knowing older batteries occasionally need water to be added. I figured the detection would come from voltage/resistance somewhere in the system, since that would vary with low water. I had never seen a sensor on a battery either, but that isn't the only way to indicate low water. I just felt I needed to defend my reasoning on that one. Good help with the pic Ward.

Re: Question about light on gauge cluster
Hey John in RI, can you tell me where that wiring harness is located, under the hood, for the Low Coolant light. The senor is in the radiator, but there is not a wire to connect to it. My 84 Berlinetta had a Z28 change over and that wire didn't make the transfer. I have tried a few times to find it, but have not been successful. I am hoping the person who did the change over just cut the wire and tucked it in the tape or something. Thanks in advance!
