4th gen dash question need help pls!

ok the cars up for the winter and numro uno on the to do list is a 4th gen dash. But i still have many unawnsered questions. Ive been searching for awhile and not getting the info i want so im posting a new thread.

1.First will a 98+ cluster wire straight up?
2.What kind of issues with the speedometer and fuel gauge is there with a 98+ dash
3.air ducts. I want the air threw the vents what kind of mods need to be done to the dash to accomplish this. i cant find any good pictures of it.
4.I heard theres complications with the heater box bieng in the way is this true? my car is a 1990 his was a 82 dont know if that makes a diffrence.

I can figure out the physical mounting no problems i just need some clairification of the above id appreciate it.

Do you plan on using the 3rd gen heater box or a 4th gen one?

you need to cut the back of the 4th gen ducting to make it line up with the 3rd gen heating vents on the car. it can be done i have done it, but unfortunately i dont have any pictures. I don't know why the heater box would be a issue, everything is very tight where the heater box is but it is doable. there is a thread on this site that has pictures of where to cut the back of the 4th gen ducts and it is pretty accurate. i followed it and all of my ducting worked. I did however have a issue getting my hvac to work correctly with the vacuum lines beacuse they are different then the 4th gen ones. i have lt1 hvac controls and everything works except the fan blowing hot air on the upper vents that are in the dash. i think it might be a problem with the actual controls however. i had a set of ls1 style hvac controls and they were set up a little differently and they did not seem as user friendly to be made to work.

your going to need a 97 or older cluster to get your gauges to work correctly beacuse of the difference in sending units of the fuel tank and other sensors. the 97 camaro clusters and the 93-97 firebird clusters are interchangeable and the 98+ on both cars are interchangeable with each other. all of those are the same shape however so a newer cluster can be used in a older car but the gauges just wont work correctly. 93-96 camaro guages are completely different and will not work with a 97+ camaro dash or a firebird dash of any year.

be careful if you get your dash and the top panel seperately beacuse there is differences in those over the years also. on the LT1 style cars (firebird, not sure of how the 97 camaro dash is) in the front corner of the defroster vent the trim panel comes to a "point" whereas the ls1 style dashes (both firebird and camaro) are more of a "round" shape. i have posted pictures on the site before of the differences so if your not sure what im takling about you can search them.

i have a 91 formula and i had to get a dakota digital box to fix my speedometer because the 4th gen and 3rd gen were reading at different pulses a minute and the speedo did not work. i have heard however of some 90-92 owners getting lucky and the speedos work fine. the box is around $100 i believe, but that was also 4 years ago so it could be cheaper now.

if you have anymore questions feel free to ask
