ok at work right now so no pics yet. picked up my 2000 SS dash up last night from a local memeber great shape. got the dash, door panels, center console, cluster, and a-pillars for 300 plus wiring.. score! thanks go to him! ok first things first the cars going to get a ls1 and a 4th gen tank for a working fuel gauge. my question is what wiring can i do now that i wont have to change later when i put the ls1 in. I just dont want to wire it up then have to rewire it because of the ls1 engine harness and how many things run of the obd2 pcm?

 

From what I can tell from the wiring diagrams that I have, I think the only thing that doesn't run off the PCM as far as gauges go is the oil pressure and voltage... Everything else is carried on a serial data stream from the PCM...

As for the oil pressure, check out this thread from LS1tech.com, the #3 post by Mr_Dude 1 seems to indicate that the LS1 sender works well enough with a 3rd gen gauge. I would assume, then, that it would also work going from a SBC sender to an LS1 gauge...

As for voltage, there are no specific wires for the voltage gauge on the connector, I would assume that it is wired up internally from one of the +12volt sources to ground.

Keep this in mind. I don't remember what year my LS1 cluster diagrams are from (except that they aren't '98) and the two other threads I used for reference seem to be using '99 clusters. Now, I have no real reason to think that a 2000 cluster pinout would be any different, but I also can't say for 100% sure that they are the same. So, with that said I would just make sure that when you are doing the wiring to check for any discrepancies, like wire colors that don't match. Also, if you have time and access to factory manuals to source your own diagrams I would do that. But, then again I am fairly obsessive and my public library has a good collection of factory service manuals...

Anyway, here's a few links to some pinouts (both are 99's, I think...) This is the one that talks about what stuff is carried on the serial data stream, and this one has a picture to show the cluster connector. Both are from LS1tech.com, which you should check out if you haven't already, they have quite the collection of info, but it usually requires some searching to dig it up...

 

ya ive been searching and reading for about two hours now.. i know im a great worker :P lmao. sounds like ill need the pcm before i get into any of the major wiring once i get this started theres going to be alot of pictures and alot of diagrams so we can finally see it step by step might take me awhile to figure it all out but i hope to have it all functional. Atleast the fuel gauge doesnt seem to be that big of a hurdle once you have the ls1 tank and sender.

 

For sure, it should all come together and work fine once you have the LS1. Good luck man. Should be pretty cool with that interior setup, I'm doing an LSx swap in my Camaro too, and I'm going with the LS1 gauge cluster. Only thing is... I am too cheap to buy a 4th gen dash... So, I'm gonna have my work cut out for me trying to cram that cluster into the 3rd gen dash. Lol, I hope it doesn't look to terribly out of place when I'm done with it... (Rounded kind of instrument cluster in an otherwise squared and angular dash)

 

good luck with making that look stock if you pull it off itll look cool. ya i love the SS cluster 150mph on the spedo its pretty sick looking. started on the stuff i could do today physical mounting doesnt look like its going to be too much of a problem just a lil bit here and there modding my vent ducts tonite.

 

You don't need to do any fancy sender or PCM work to get a working fuel gauge from a LS1 cluster. You simply remove the needle and the fuel guage itself and put an older one in its place , then reinstall the needle. FYI a thirdgen gas gauge will not work in its place because the needle turns the opposite way. One from a 2ndgen works fine or simply find one from another GM car in the yard.
