camaro gauge cluster compatability????

i have a 1987 base camaro with a basic gauge cluster with idiot lights

i want real gauges not lights

i can replace the sensors no probelm

but what should i look for on ebay for a replacement gauge cluster?

what years or versions are compatible?

my guages don't have rpm but is the wireing there in teh connector jsut not being used?

and would the wiring connectors in teh back of the cluster stay teh same or have to change as well

any insight would be great help guys cuz i have no clue

Re: camaro gauge cluster compatability????

ok i did soem research from what i gather:

82-89 clusters r plug n play, the base camaro already has a tach wire there so thats great you can basically drop an iroc cluster into a base camaro as long as its from 82-92

all i gota do is drop a cluster i want in and change the sending units

the 90 or 91-92 for sure had electronic speedos and everything is completely different. nto a direct swap at all

now if anyone wants t o clarify my findings or add to it or correct me please do

Re: camaro gauge cluster compatability????

There are differences in the 82-89 clusters,....... If you use one from an 82-84 in your 87 than there will be a problem with the E-Barake warning light and one of the cluster "backlights".

If your car is a V6 than be sure the cluster is from a V6 too! ( To more specific: the Tachometer is specific to the engine -but the rest of the cluster will work fine. ) V6 Tachometers show 40-80 Oil Pressure and V8 Tach show 30/60 Oil Pressure.

Once you install the gauge cluster ( with correct Tach ) all you will need to do is to install the proper sending units on the engine for the gauges to work.

I've got a good V6 cluster available:

Re: camaro gauge cluster compatability????

wait.. i just bought a 145 mph hour cluster out of an 87 for my 88. my 88 came stock with a 115 mph. when i bought the car the tach was completely off. it read like 5000 rpm when idleing (spelling?) and the speedo didnt work at all. changed the speedo cable and it still didnt work so i just decided to change the whole cluster out. im going to install it tomorrow, but i thought it was just a direct swap? didnt know you had to change the sending units on the engine as well?? i bought this car about 2 months ago and the guy i bought it from swapped the engine for a 350 tbi. it had a 305 tbi. but theres lots of wires just dangling around and everything. it runs great. starts right up, drives fine. but are these sending units going to be in the same place as if it was a 305? im reallly sorry just verrrrry confused on the whole sending unit thing. if somebody could please verify it would be great. thanks!

MichaelSparks88: He's only got Warning lights in his cluster right now...... your car sounds like it originally had gauges in it. Warning light clusters have "switches" and gauge clusters use "sending units".

Re: camaro gauge cluster compatability????

from what i've gathered in this thread, theres a wire already set up for the Tachometer..

That being said, if i get an aftermarket (dash mount) tach, can i simply connect the wires? I have a 5 speed 87 2.8l v6 and instead of a tach i have a giant gas gauge.

Re: camaro gauge cluster compatability????

if you can find the wire in the connectors...

run a tap off of it and send to the aftermarket gauge.

im keeping my 5spd as stock as possible so i boguht a v6 camaro cluster from and RS or up model that has all the neeeded gauges

Re: camaro gauge cluster compatability????

Ok, I'm confused and need help. I have an 86' Iroc with the 85mph top speed cluster, and then I have another 86 Iroc parts car with the 145mph top speed cluster. The MPH limit is the only difference I can see between the 2 clusters. Can I simply take the 145mph cluster and repace the 85mph cluster, and everything will work? Or do I have to replace other parts in the car? Any help would be great.

86 cluster with 85 speedo and full gauges
86 cluster with 145 speedo and full gauges

This is a "direct swap" !

P.S. You will obviously no longer have the correct odometer reading for your car. The odometer dial can easily be re-set ( pulled from one speedo and placed into the replacement speedo ) but that may or may not be "legal" where you live.

You could install a complete factory V6 cluster for about the same cost and have a working Tach as soon as it was plugged in.... Volts should work too. ( you could buy the TEMP and Oil Pressure sensors later if you wanted them to work - they are pretty cheap.)

If you simply prefer to have an externally mounted Tachometer......... The Tach wire can be found at the distributor and run into the passenger compartment.

Thank you for the response, thats the beauty, there is only a 1k mile difference between these 2 clusters, which is the only reason why I considered it.

Re: camaro gauge cluster compatability????

I have had the parts car sitting around for a few years, and it was parked with 103k on it, and when I picked up my recent IROC it had 101k, and I barely put any miles on it this past summer due to Carb issues. Now that the mileage is close, I'm looking into it.

Re: camaro gauge cluster compatability????

I have replaced the cluster in my 87 Camaro V6, Tach and speedometer, and altmeter working fine. Do I need to replace the coolant temp sensor or coolant temp sending unit. The sensor is 2 wires on the front of the intake and the sender has one wire and I am not sure of the local.

Re: camaro gauge cluster compatability????

So is it possible to swap a temperature gauge from an '84 305 tbi into an '86 305 tpi. I swapped one from a berlinetta into an iroc, but it rises very quickly and the car doesn't seem like it's overheating.

Re: camaro gauge cluster compatability????

probably need to swap apsolutley everything! basically take the entire dash and swap it. all electronics and car computer but then theres compatibility issues between the dash and the engine which is another mess i can't really concieve of at the moment and hopefully the engine is close enough in type and year that the computer will be compatible but from early 80s to early 90s your probably going to have to swap out engines and at that point.....

just buy a damn berlinetta dirt cheap and be done with it

Re: camaro gauge cluster compatability????

junk yard is good for parts. especially for berlinettas. but i would try to find an already running berlinetta and fix that one up.

problem is, those cars were built with economy and luxury in mind and not the speed and performance we expect from something like an iroc.

if you want power plus the cool electronic dash. best bang for buck in my opinion is the late 80s Pontiac firebird GTA's!!!!!!

Yeah I see what you're saying. I was just thinking of pulling out the cluster and selling it on craigslist for a few more bucks or maybe trade it for something. I just seen it today and wanted to know exactly what needed to be done to swap it but after hearing all that i think I'm better off sticking with my 145 cluster lol

Won't work. Your RS gauge is electronic, the other is cable driven. No fit physically either.

Sure; Pull the entire dash housing and all it's wiring from your 91 and install a 82-89 Dash housing and wiring harness in it's place,...... than re-wire everything.

Re: camaro gauge cluster compatability????

I know thread from the dead.... but i'm hoping someone can help.. my 85 iroc dash is broken.. i have a 91 dash ... what i'm planning on doing is swapping in an ls3 and t-56 from Hawks .. so the computer and everything OEM will be gone.. now will an 85 OEM housing with after market gauges bolt up?
