Shifter Doesnt Lock Into Positions????

Hey guys, got an 89 IROC auto and my shifter doesnt lock into its positions (drive, park, etc). I can move the shifter without pushing down on the button and I can do this with out the key even in the ignition. I worry about someone hitting my shifter into park our reverse or 1st on the highway or something. What is the cause of this and what do I need to do to fix it? Thanks in advance for any help. James.

Re: Shifter Doesnt Lock Into Positions????

My brother had this problem in his firebird. His had the T-handle, so I'm not sure if it will be the same problem or not. His ended up being a plastic piece in the spring mechanism that keeps pressure on the plunger that locks the shifter in place. He just bought a new shifter top, and solved the problem.

Thanks for the reply, yeah I'm probably going to screw around with it and see what I can find. Any other suggestions?
