well when i got a new door, i decided it was time to make some new door panels!

so it went from this:

its basically the same, but the new ones is new board and materials, and it looks new, the old were all sloppy and dirty and worn out

 

What did you use for backer board and where did you get it? Also what type of difficulty rating would you give this? Is it something you do regularly or is this your first time. If its a first time job its a damn good one, what is that vinyl and suede? I've been thinking of something like this for my own vehicle.

 

Wow! Great job. Looks good. If mine were in bad condition I would try this, but mine are pretty nice so no need.

 

its some wood stuff, i think its called masonite, i wanted something stronger then that cardboard stuff that was originally in there

its my first time, and it was not that hard, it just took some time and patience

you got a JoAnns fabric store around you? thats were i got mine, and i got it 50% off too!

 

turned out pretty good there. like it better than stock. upper carpet looks like velour or soemthing like a plush, nice

kinda showed what i went from and too. first pic is the original door. this was the driver door but the passenger side door was all black bc i had to cover it bc it was messed up from water etc so picture it worse lol. i wanted aluminum panels. so this is what i did.

cost me 85$ for 2 panels that i just cut to fit. also installed two 6.5" speakers to make my new system 8speakers

Masonite is also commonly known as Hardboard, and can be found at Home Depot or Lowes. They look nice :-)

Be careful about which "masonite" you buy from home depot or lowes!!

There is some masonite made from eucalyptis wood (spelling not correct)
That is good for automotive use

The softer "masonite" will warp if any moisture is present
High humidity counts in this as well

Make sure you install a vapor barrier behind the door panel
You know that bothersome plastic sheet that is in your way when you go to change a power window motor.
This keeps the water that seeps past the window from affecting your door panel

I haven't tried it myswlf, but a water repellant, aka thompson's water seal or something equivelant should be applied to the masonite, if you purchase the softer type from your local store

Part of my job is to fabricate interior panels for brand new fire tucks and other automotive upholstery issues as well. We (my employer) steers away from the softer masonite from home depot or lowes, because experience has shown that what I explained above will occur.

That looks nice! My wife and I are getting ready to do ours. We are going to be using courregated plastic (Basically it is cardboard box material that is made from plastic.) It also has the advantage of being lighter than masonite and impervious to water. (A must for the typically leaky thirdgens) It's nice to see someone tackle a project like that, as most people dont have the nerve to even try it.

Most major citys have a bunch of "Auto upholstery supply houses". It's where most of the auto upholstery shops go to met their most common materials such as vinyl and velour. Check your local phone book for auto upholstery supply.

it looks like the gray was before and the black is after. I think the black is a nice improvement.

 

I just made some new door panels for myself using the same method you used.

I think I have about $50 in both sides.....a whole lot cheaper than paying the supply houses $150 + shipping for repros.

 

damn, i guess i missed that post! i had gay, but they were all dirty, really dirty, with red paint on them, so when i got a new door at the junkyard, i grabbed the other side(black) and i think it looks alot better with black!


those look great! was it hard getting that top black piece on? mine was since it was so think.

 

Yeah it was tough getting the top piece on, I ended up cutting some material away around the upper openings in the hardboard.

I also sanded that area down to about 1/16" thickness enough for the nuts to bite onto the studs for the upper rails.

It was basically too thick and the nuts couldn't grab

Looks nice, I have to do something similar, but i have to delete the arm rests,(cage issues) any suggestions so it doesnt look so plain? I want to do it my self so sewing in a bowtie isnt happening!

It is looking good.
My panel is out since two month, I am building mine slowly... I took the exact same cardboard as the original (around 6 or 8$). One fabric that looks exactly the same and one other is a bit different (I did not liek the carpet style). I think I will stay under 80$ for both door, may be a bit more with all the small expenses.
What "strip" did you put? I have some cheap one (about 1$ a yard), it looks but does not bend very well, and I dont know if it will glue enough.

yep, pop it off and go at it, you also might wanna start with buying the materials!

Yeah they look great!!!!!!!!!! I basically have had the Ideato do the same thing to mine only I am going to use black and red vinyl to match my paint job.

 

i was thinking of doing the same thing, where did u get the panels from and does the sun get them hot enough to where its not friendly to the touch kind of like seat belts

You could take the peices of material to a shop and have the embroidered. It costs 10 for like a 6" bowtie around here. Or find a rest home and pay some granny to do it.

 

Got my door panels on today, I added some fatmat and new weatherstipping while they were off...the doors are nice and solid feeling now.
