Headliner Opinions

Its been to my benefit to consult people who share a similar interest and everyone on this form has been very helpful with different advice.

So I just took my head liner off my car and having a day to think (Jo Ann's is closed today, Happy Easter!) Who thinks that the stock grey headliner should go back up, and who thinks a new design is in order? By design I only mean like grey with 2 black racing strips? Things like that.

Opinions? Ideas? Pictures?

Re: Headliner Opinions

It all depends on your own personal preferences... I have a buddy who put one layer of material down in a flame pattern and then covered it with another layer and it looks sharp and personally I am replacing my entire interior with all black and am putting faint tread mark patterns in the headliner just for a subtle effect I think multi colored headliners might look a bit awkward... but to each his own =P

Re: Headliner Opinions

I'd say go for the stock look, because it'll most likely match the rest of your interior. However, it may be a good idea to get some new grey up there if it's not in perfect condition.

Re: Headliner Opinions

I say make a fiberglass replication in which so I may purchase it off of you. I hate our stock headliners. I want a fiberglassed painted headliner. Strong, will never sag, and smoke wont get caught up in the fabric forever...haha.

Otherwise put a design behind the fabric like stated above. I think stock is for those who don't express themselves, or are otherwise just plain people without imagination AKA boring..haha.

Take care

Re: Headliner Opinions

Thanks for the personal attack. I'm suddenly less expressive because I think an interior should match? If he has an otherwise stock grey interior and then a random blue and red flame headliner it'll look like crap. I'm sorry I'm boring and understand the basics of matching.

Re: Headliner Opinions

lay down your arms, everyone is entitled to an opinion,
that's why i started this thread,
I like the pattern idea, but would like a stock look

i was thinking grey with a black stripe the widths of the dome light housing down the center.

matching, simple, unique.

but i dont know if the seams would sag or not look good.

Re: Headliner Opinions

I don't really think that was a personal attack. Just an opinion. Anyway... It really does depend on your taste. I personally like stock. I don't like the painted interiors and stuff. However, I have seen some good custom work that looks good to me. The truth is I am boring. LOL.

I would love to help you out, but I'm only 17, I don't think I can work with fiberglass in a way to be usable, or even cosmetically acceptable =/.

I like that, and with a tread pattern it will look WAY BETTER, the flames are just getting old to me. Haha, wonder what an old school muscle car guy would say to that comment "flames getting old"

Re: Headliner Opinions

Are the flames held up by like a cardboard cutout behind the material or what? Because I think I know what I'm going to do based off how you got the flames to pop out.

Re: Headliner Opinions

lol not gonna lie, I forgot all headliners don't look like T-Top ones XD. I was thinking that it'd be like a random non colored stripe. Doesn't look half shabby, good quality work. To each his own.

The flames are made from a thicker rigid packing foam so that it looks smooth and looks natural...

Thank you, I'm thinking of doing a black strip down the middle of the headliner that pops out a little bit, and so i can hide the seams from the edge of the grey and black materials. It would only be the width of the dome light. I should be done within the end of the week, Ill post pictures.

Anyone have any comments on how that will look?

Like I said before I think a multicolored headliner might look a bit awkward but Ive never seen it before so we can only answer once you post your pics =P

Re: Headliner Opinions

Any chance anyone could get me a nice shot of there Third Gen's headliner that's in decent condition so that I can photoshop the possibilities? I think it might be awkward too, but it might look good, so I might as well check first.

It might look like this but not as a console or T Tops.

Guess I'll try it, worst case, I take it out and do it again right?
Ill let you guys know the results later in the week.

Re: Headliner Opinions

Too many variables taste, color of car, color of interior, your personality what you wear, your gender, etc.
Just have to figure out something your into and put it up. If your happy with it then that is all that matters.

What kind of headliner do you have? Full roof? Sun roof? T-Top? If you fiberglass a t-top roof you're probably ok, but a full roof? Might be heavy enough that you'd need additional fasteners to hold it up. But you could do a nice design in fiberglass, or you could do a nice design in headliner fabric if that's the route you want to go.

My advice? I personally hate stock. Not because it looks bad, but because if you're going to take the time to rebuild, reupholster, replace a part, you should make it better, or at least more personal.

But I also caution that if you do a custom fiberglass headliner and leave the rest of your interior stock it's gonna look dumb and out of place. If you want to go custom on the headliner, then you need to make the commitment to go custom on the rest.

If you do a fabric design in the headliner, you'll probably be able to get away with it if you stick with the factory style headliner material, but if you go with something like custom leather, or two tone or something, you should do your seats to match.

But even if you use stock headliner fabric and do a design, it would look even better if you did the door panels to match.

It's all about having a plan.

Re: Headliner Opinions

A friend of mine in the Marines had an American flag for a headliner in his Chevy pickup; I thought it looked awesome, and I wanted to do something similar.

Ok let me find my dentures so I can chew you out proper-like

It's not so much the flames are "old", as I've seen them on everything done in every way, and it's just not interesting anymore, kinda like the Ghosted Skulls and the cracked granite. How about something original, like an American flag in relief in the headliner of your truck. Give that man a pat on the back.
