Overhead Console Experiments Continue

First, check the following link for LED conversion if you haven’t seen it:

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/inte...-overhead.html

If you have an overhead console without a flashlight, as many members do, you’re cursed with an unflattering hole. If you never plan to install a flashlight, here’s a way to cover the problem (if you have other solutions, please post them):

Use an ALDI port cover (GM p/n 14083923).

1) Make a template from the hush panel.
2) Mock it up on the overhead* and use masking tape for protection.
3) Cut at a slow speed with a Dremel or other such tool.

*The cover fits looser than I expected, basically because the cover is slightly bowed—I suspect heat is the culprit as the cover certainly wasn’t designed in that fashion. I haven’t tried a heatgun, but that might flatten the cover enough so that the bow doesn’t show when the cover is in place. Also, cutting a bit smaller and test fitting until you’re satisfied might be a good idea. Gluing and clamping is also a possibility.

If you have a custom interior or you wish to freshen/brighten the OE interior, you can always paint an appropriate color. I used Rust-Oleum Direct-to-Plastic Paint in red, though there are many colors to choose from. Mask and spray.

That is very well done and looks excellent. The vinyl look of the cover really ties in with the pocket. Very nice touch with the red too, and how you painted it unassembled so the roller panel and map light housing stayed black. All in all a very nice factory looking job, I love it. I was lucky enough to get the light with mine, or I would definately put this fix in effect. Now all you need to do is replace the dead elastic on that pocket and it will look brand new.

I have a roll of that elastic left over from repairing my overhead pocket and my dash pouch, if you have an extra pocket laying around, I could fix it up for you on the sewing machine and you could swap it out. Aside from the postage I would do it for no charge, as payback for the help you gave me on that auto adjusting mirror. If your interested let me know, I can show some pics of mine with the new elastic. Ill even throw in a new set of press nuts to mount it, since I have a whole box of those now too after fixing mine.

Hey, Net,

Many thanks for the offer. The console, however, is just an experiment as I have several bodies lying around and was, well, bored.
