Auto shift plate ?

Just wondering if the piece of the shifter, (I think the shifter slider) that moves can be changed. If so where can I get one, and how is it done? I have searched all over.

Edit: Forgot to say its on a 92 auto

Re: Auto shift plate ?

The 82-87 style shift plates I dont think you can,but the 88-92 style you can replace the underside parts.Ive done it on quite a few.First thing is you have to seperate the underside from the top plate.I usually use a flat bladed screwdriver and just pry it apart. Its held together with adhesive.Once you get it apart you will see how it works.I have a big box full of spare parts from these shift plates.I might have what you need.Which piece exactly are you looking for?

I need the shifter slider, the piece that the shifter actually goes through. But i want the correct "corrugated" style, not the earlier smooth style.
Heres a pic

No that piece is melted to the shift plate. Your best bet is to find a good used shift plate.

The 'part with the lettering' - do you mean the P R N D D 2 1 part? If so, that part is removeable and fixable. I had a local sign shop guy make me a new piece to go in there, and it turned out really nice (in fact, he's a TGO member and has a very sweet IROC).

Yeah that is the part i mean. Does it just pop out once you take the console apart? Id like to make it look better since it looks like crap right now.

Re: Auto shift plate ?

Yeah, I don't remember it being really hard to get apart - as with anything plastic, just be careful. I also had a spare plate laying around for extra parts in case I broke something, but I don't think I ever used it.

I always hated that slider with the grooves - it collects so much dust and dirt and just looks nasty after 2 days. I took a piece of black plastic binder material (like a report cover with 3 rings), and I cut a chunk out of it and put it in place, so I'd have a smooth cover that doesn't collect all that dust.
