How do you remove clear cover from gauges?

Hey all, did some searching for this and didnt see anything. In my new 91 camaro the clear cover in front of the gauges is real dirty on the inside. I was wondering how exactly can I remove it to clean? Thanks!

Re: How do you remove clear cover from gauges?

On a Trans Am, you need to remove the bezel (I don't think you have to remove the complete gauge cluster). Once the bezel is off there are a few small bolts and the trip odometer **** to go and the clear lense should come off.

Re: How do you remove clear cover from gauges?

if you have a 82-90 camaro, take off the torx screws that hold the plastic bezel on the gauges.
next, there are a bunch of 5.5mm screws holding everything together. you will see the plastic cover clearly here and will be able to remove the screws that holds it on.

why do you want to remove it?
if its scratched, there is this plastic polish called plastix that cleaned mine up to a perfectly clear finish
if your temp gauge is getting stuck (as all the ones i have had do) take the gauge out by removing all the screws so you can get at the actual gauges and pull the temp gauge out.
next, take a needle-nose to it and pry the edge of the gauge up so that it blocks the needle from getting stuck. takes a bit of trial and error but its not hard

That is 82 to 89. In 1990 they change the gauges. Just to put that out there.

Re: How do you remove clear cover from gauges?

Ok hear it goes from memory. The cover below the steering wheel needs to come off two bolt i believe and then you can pull it off. after that remove the light thing that you pull out to turn on the lights by just pulling hard and it should pop off (at less in the 90 model) and pull anything you have in the cirgit socket out . Now i am able to pull the black framing of the gauge off. then there are a few bolt along the edge that are easy to see and take those out and you can pull it out.

Re: How do you remove clear cover from gauges?

Thanks for the responses... seems like some work to get it off. Ill look at it closely tomorrow but I may just wait till I replace the front speakers, dash has to come out anyway.

Re: How do you remove clear cover from gauges?

i did this the other day.

remove lower knee panel, 5 torx screws 2 upper 3 lower

remove headlight **** by 1) pull lever to headlights on, 2)reach up behind switch and depress the silver spring button and 3)wiggle as well as pull out the headlights lever/****.

unscrew the 2 7mm screws on the instrument cluster's surrounding bezel and then pull the whole bezel off

disconnect the wiring from the cig lighter, defrost, and possibly running light switch or whatever's in the bottom left side if anything.

you may have to lower the tilt wheel to get that out

now if you want to take the whole gauge assembly out you need to lower the steering column, so get underneath the dash and with your 13mm deep socket take off the black v shaped bracket, and then remove the 2 nuts that hold the column up. lower the steering wheel all the way to the seat.

now a few screws hold the gauges in 7mm i believe, and it pulls right out.

then when putting it back in i thought the wiring needed to clip into the gauges, but it just needs to stay in the dash and it slides itself in position when you put the gauges back in.

it's not that hard... takes me like 5 minutes for all that, just a lot to say

also to put the headlight **** back in, push the silver spring button in and then put in and wiggle the lever til it clicks in, then release the spring button, and you can put the switch on off again

Re: How do you remove clear cover from gauges?

Once you remove the kick panel, there are two screws for the Bezel for the gauge cluster on each side of the steering column.

The only thing holding you back from taking off the bezel completely is the DEF, Cig. lighter, and the light switch ****. The DEF and cig. lighter, are just wire plugs. For the light switch ****, (DONT JUST PULL ON IT AS HARD AS YOU CAN) if you lay directly under the light switch, you will see a silver button with a spring.

Pull the light switch **** out so that the headlights would be in the on position. Now with they **** pulled to the on position, push the button under the light switch with your finger (if it reaches) or the eraser end of a pencil. While holding that button in, you can now take the light switch **** out.

Now remove the bezel.

You will have to lower your Steering column in order to get the clear plastic gauge cover. There are six screws holding this cover on. Two on top and four on bottom. remove the screws and take off the clear plastic cover.

Re: How do you remove clear cover from gauges?

Two Brake Tony had great advice here. I just needed to clean my gauge cluster lense on my 91 Z. Following the advice worked real well.
1.pop out knee bolster caps
2.Torx bolts on my 91...2 under the cap themselves,3 more at underdash panel
3.un clip from underdash/remove
4.push silver pushbutton from headlight switch..looks like a rivet with a spring to remove headlight pull ****.
5.drop tilt wheel into down position.
6.pull front dash trim piece forward/toward you..Pull easy but firm, not allowing it to pull too far.. there are 2 7mm screws under column here..do first!
7.unclip the cig lighter by pulling lobster claws away from cylinder of lighter socket
8.squeeze clip to remove defogger
9.unclip driving light switch on left side column..squeeze type i think, but easy
10.you will see 6 aluminum color 5.5mm's holding lense on..can use 9/32 socket also..or nutdriver
11.pull toward you,pay attention to trip odometer reset
12. use lint free microfiber cloth to clean inside..i used Chemical guys window cleaner lightly sprayed on rag first...ammonia free, safe for window tints, etc
13. use light amounts of wax,on applicator pad to wax both sides of lense...use microfiber to remove
14. dont try to dust your gauges, you may hook a needle....
take your time, leave your phone off, and pay attention..sorry no pics, i was concentrating on info found here...thought i'd add some info....
