Removing Steering Wheel.. for dummy!!

Alright I want to remove my old steering wheel and replace with new one i got. Not redoing anything with ignition or anything just replacing wheel, and i don't beleive my car has air bag cuz i know passenger side didn't. Can some one run through everything i need to do, I've never tried it before cuz i don't want to mess anything up, but i don't want to have to send it into shop to do it. I appreciate your help. Thanks!

Re: Removing Steering Wheel.. for dummy!!

welcome to the boards. Removing the steering wheel is pretty simple. You have to remove the horn button. Then you'll see a big nut (not sure what size). Remove that nut. You will have to buy a steering wheel puller to attach to the hub (middle where the actual steering wheel is attached to). Use the steering wheel puller to "pop" off the wheel. The wheel is just pressed in from the factory...

Should be able to borrow or rent one easily. The "metal fan looking thing" is called the lock plate, and if you're just changing steering wheels, then you don't have to mess with that, but if you do you'll need another tool called a lock plate compressor.

Re: Removing Steering Wheel.. for dummy!!

15 bucks at autozone will rent or buy it.

its also like a crankshaft balancer pulley, in which is 3 bolt puller but can convert to 2

it is what i own and use all the time for steering wheels.

i just put a 90 oldsmpbile cutlass calais wheel in my '91 s-10

so much better feeling and looking wow.....

i did have a 85 riviera wheel in it but i didnt like it as much as i thought i would..

the puller kit will have two longer length 5/16" diameter coarse threaded bolts to use

see the two threaded holes in the steel steering wheel center hub

use those.

good luck

Re: Removing Steering Wheel.. for dummy!!

I'm changing out my RS wheel for a LT wheel. the LT wheel has 6 torx screws holding the wheel to the steel bracket that the one center nut goes on.

Will the RS stock wheel have the 6 torx on it too, and if I'm just swapping one for the other, is there any reason to remove the center nut?

this is for an 89, no air bag
