STEERING COLUMN HELP
I recently busted the plug in thing at the bottom of the steering column on my 89' firebird and i figured i would just go to a junkyard and get a whole new column but all the ones near me dont have any third gen cars and i was wondering if i could get the column out of any other car/truck cause they have an S10 and a monte carlo with columns that look alot alike so if anyone has put one in with success or know the column part number for mine it would be a world of help THANKS
Re: STEERING COLUMN HELP
Well, here's the bad news. 1989 was a one year only column so in order for everything to work correctly you need a column from an '89 Camaro or Firebird. The only difference between '84-'88 columns and an '89 column is the addition of the VATS system. So if you want to bypass the VATS system you can use a column from an '84-'88 car. The '90-'92 columns used VATS as well but the wiring is completely different.
Of course, you could also get an '84-'88 column and swap over the lock cylinder from you old column which would keep your VATS functional.

Re: STEERING COLUMN HELP
so i went to the junkyard today turns out the camaro had a 5spd and i remeber reading somewhere that it wont work is that true thanks i could really use the help!!
Re: STEERING COLUMN HELP
It will work but you'll need to add a piece from your old column. Just put the two column side by side and you'll see the piece missing on the 5-speed column. All you need to do is take it off your old column and add it to the new one.
