Swapping 91 RS Console for 85 Z28
Swapping 91 RS Console for 85 Z28
I have a 91 Camaro RS and an 85 Z28 that I am suing for parts. I started to swap the consoles and discovered the 91 was an all electronic display with no speedometer cable. I am wanting to put in the 85 Z28 Console becasue it is in better shape. Is there a way to do this and can I get and connect a speedometer cable or is this going to be impossible or very expensive. Thanks
Re: Swapping 91 RS Console for 85 Z28
Can anybody help? I am trying to decide what to do. I have found a spot where I can buy another 91 Console but I like the look of the Z28. Any help would be appreciated

perhaps all viewers are confused ( as am i ) , when you say console you are refering to the section between driver & passenger . where the gear shifter and glove box is . could you mean the inst. panel ? i also have a 91 r/s and i also like the looks of the earlier inst. panels . whatever you mean , good luck .

I am sorry for the confusion. I mean the intrument panel that goes across the front under teh windshield. It has the dash as a part of it. I am trying to swap it out (the whole panel) but noticed that the actual instrument cluster is all electronic including the speedometer. I want to put the panel and the dash from the 85 Z28 in. I did not mean the middle section with teh shift lever. I am sorry for the confusion

Are you switching the entire dash? An instrument panel from an '85 will not fit in a '91 dash, in case you didn't get that by looking at it. If you are indeed switching the complete dash, then as you noticed, your '91 does not use a cable for the speedo. I believe it is possible to convert your car to cable driven. From the donor car you need the cable driven speedo sleeve and driven gear, which will eliminate the vss in your car now. Should just bolt right up to the tranny. Is the RS a 6 or an 8? You may need a new gear...

Yes, I am looking at swapping the entire dash. Does the VSS matter if I don't use it and use a cable? The 91 RS is a 305 TBI. The 85 has a built 350 TPI. It appears that there are 2 electric connectors that were in the instrument cluster on the 91 dash. It looks like the 85 has the same type of connector except for teh speedometer cable. Should they just plug in and work for the other gauges?
Re: Swapping 91 RS Console for 85 Z28
You should also know that 90-92 dashes bolt up differently that 82-89 dashes so your '91 dash will not be a direct bolt in for your '85.
