Re: Best Appearance Mods

You can see a few of my goodies here:

http://s287.photobucket.com/albums/ll121/jw_baum/92RS/

The interior really gets personal, it's good to see what others have done to spark ideas to make yours suit you - I look at all cars, love the classics from the 50's, 60's, 70's - also like to see what the tuner guys are doing - alot of 'tuner' stuff is just overkill on a car like an F-body - but it sparks ideas - some really cool stuff going on that makes a car personal to you.

Re: Best Appearance Mods

^^ like he said its pretty much your choice with many things, your taste and ideas. some things are as limited as your imagination. but some things i've seen

-4th gen dash/console
-door panels (thats an area for imagination)
-the seats
-deleting the rear seats *in 4th gens they have boxlike enclosures that go in place of the rear seats, and can be used for storage, others put subs.*
-people replace some parts with aluminum such as door sills and door panels.
-made cupholders in the console.

thats just of the top of my head, i'm sure there's more. what may be best for someone, may not be for you, and vice versa

Re: Best Appearance Mods

i'll look at other cars for stuff that you might like, iv always loved the 3spoke (grant?) sterring wheel thats is i belive a polished finish which i think would look good with other stainless trim, maybe blue bulbs for the instrumental gauges (you can also buy lights that shine on for like 15 bucks), footrest lights, blue overhead lights. i'll try to think of more.

Re: Best Appearance Mods

A few of mine that are done or in the works are:

- recovered cloth with gray suede sunvisors, speaker covers
- 4th gen ebony cloth front/rear seats
- swapped from grey to black deluxe door panels
- painted interior plastics from stock blue/grey to black
- new shift ****, shift boot
- red LED bulbs in gauges
- new Grant GT wheel
- red LED humount
- polished gauge rings

I still have to get a new headliner redo it in the suede and redo the cloth on the deluxe door panels in suede.

Re: Best Appearance Mods

One of the best upgrades IMO is to replace/upgrade the headliner and carpet. Sounds boring, but they are the largest surfaces on the inside of the car, along with the seats, and changing to a newer and/or better fabric will enhance the interior greatly.

I'm planning on it. I'm making a custom fiberglass panel for my new tinted gauges. Along with interior car paint to match my exterior, which will soon be done Candy Apple Red
can't wait for it to be done. as soon as I've got the paint done, I'm redoing the whole interior.

New black carpet.
4th gen ebony leather seats
4th gen console
Painted the rings around the gauges.

I'm in the process of recovering some deluxe door panels to match the seats.

You have any pictures of the 4th gen console?

Unfortunately, I don't. My camera crapped out on me a while back or I would go out and snap one for you. But, there are tons of pics of similar setups all over the forum.

Re: Best Appearance Mods

I think the little things, like strengthening the radio pod so it doesn't wobble and rattle as you drive would make a difference. That, and just do something with the seats. Almost anything can be an improvement for these seats if they're the original seats. 4th gen power seats (with inflatable lumbar and side bolsters) are a popular choice.

There's also an article or how-to floating around on installing an auto-darkening mirror (with or without compass). Besides adding a new age edge to our interiors, it adds functionality with the auto-darkening feature.

Does anyone know if gauges can be bought that fit right into the stock cluster? I noticed plenty of bolts on the back that hold the individual gauges, but I'm not sure if it's just the mechanism, or if the faceplate comes with it, etc. I think a great improvement would be to have an aftermarket tach mounted smoothly in the cluster - that way there's not an extra tach hanging around the car (It looks especially gaudy when you move into the dinner plate sizes). If an aftermarket tachometer is in your future, that is.

I am actually planning on buying Autometer Phantom speedometer and tachometer, along with 4 tinted gauges (volt, water temp, oil temp, and fuel level). All of which will be going into a custom fiberglass dash panel I'll be fabricating myself. Should look pretty cool. Painting it candy apple red probably to match the future colour of the body. The whole interior will eventually be black and red. Should look pretty cool

Re: Best Appearance Mods

Polished aluminum door sills
4th gen kick panels
4th gen door panels
red painted gauge rings
lt1 style center console
mba billet shift ****
early 3rd gen steering wheel
led map and cargo lights
blazer roof console

I'm currently working on covering the interior plastics and sun visors with some nice high grade vinyl. I got sick of my doors and kick panels and dash being dark and the rest being that light gray, but no pics of that yet. I only am about half done, and its slow going.

Nice mods so far guys!
All i've done is added an 2001 S10 CD Player, and sanded down the nintendo squares on the radio bezel and painted them with Krylon Fusion Gloss Black, and cleared it with Tremclad Gloss Clear, and it looks great! I'll snap a pic here tmrw.
I plan on doing this to the other square bezels that surround my digital gauges and everything, it would def look awesome.

Damn, I have wanted to do something like that since I bought my GTA 2 years ago. I think the stock dash trim is weird. I have a digital dash on my GTA too, I want to die all of the Grey plastic on the dash, radio pod, and center console black. Or maybe die the radio pod and center console camel to match the carpet and seats? I don't know, I just know the stock look is just too cheap looking.. Please let me know when you post pics, I want to see what yours looks like!

Re: Best Appearance Mods

Pics as promised.
And I have yet to figure out how to make the button lights show, I think because I have an 88 with the steering wheel controls that the light power supply is integrated with the steering wheel control harness which I can not hook up to the new deck, so I have to find a newer harness and try to pin mine into it... Hopefully I can figure something out.

I made em using some aluminum stock I got from Home Depot. The emblems came from the trunks of some junkyard Sunbirds.

yeah they have plenty of room. They are about half the height of the stock pieces, and my hinges arent sagging anymore, so that helps.

Re: Best Appearance Mods

I agree on being original. I have an '83 Trans Am and am in the middle of doing transmission work on it. We had to take the shifter out of the trans, and to do that, you have to remove the center console...well lemme tell ya, the center console is a BITCH and a half to remove, so I'm just going to leave it out until I can come up with a design that I'm happy with and my friends and I are going to make a custom console that fits the rest of the interior, yet looks much different than the stock one...and can be removed MUCH easier. LoL

Other than that, I'll be looking at a Grant F1 steering wheel, making a custom pod for new Auto Meter gauges in dash, new carpet/headliner, wrapping all plastics with black vinyl, getting 4th gen cloth seats and re-working them, and of course, making custom door panels. I'm very excited to start this, since I work at an upholstery shop...but I have to make time for other parts of the car too...especially performance, since I have a pooch of a LG4 with a whopping 150 ponies. LAME!

Pretty much a pain in the ***, but so worth it. You have to do alot of cutting on the inner door skin to get the panels to fit right. Theres a bunch of threads out there of people who have done it, but it seems every person has done the panels differently in some way. They're definitely a totally custom project.

And i'm almost done sanding the squares out of my shift plate, should have some pics of it installed with a new shift boot in a few days, it should look awesome.

not sure about an f-body, but it was easy in my lumina. woulda been easier without the full length console.

there's probly some sort of support brace in the roof near the windshield that you can drill out for the 1 screw that holds it to go in there. for the one in my lumina i had to drill 3 holes. well i didn't drill them i used machine screws that went right in. i drilled one in the front brace near the windshield and 2 more near where the dome light is. there's also a brace there too.

Trust me, the seats are going to go eventually. I just have other priorities at the moment.

The roof console, I basically did what Sablemaniac did. Used the existing roof support.

Re: Best Appearance Mods

Well I have no pics yet, but I have installed a set of universal racing seats, and let me tell you they are not all that universal. The brackets and sliders that came included did not even come close to fitting, so I had to use the originals and drill them out, unfortunately they are all black, so I'm gonna get some red thread and sow it into the seams and possibly add an embroidery of my Firebird thats identical to my tattoo! I have a smaller grant racing wheel in there, along with a B&M shifter, and a set of camaro single tone red door panels. However I dont have the additional sound system upgrade accessory thingy on the dash so in that spot I was going to install a flip toggle switch like a missle for jets. and have the switch operate flame throwers, just need to buy them...

I will be putting in an 8 point cage and racing harnesses along with a custom headliner, not sure where to go yet. I have a radio with a screen on it that I'm trying to hook up to an XBOX 360 and get a wireless connection. I need to do new carpet, I was thinking of re-doing the lights in LED for the interior, then I saw the 4th gen mods for the console and dash... Those are looking very good! If I do the console I just need a new boot to keep the B&M shifter. Also the thought of a cup holder sounds very nice!! There alot of very cool ideas on here! I have to give everyone a thumbs up and a good job!

Where did you get these, or does anyone know some different styles of these? I googled and searched this forum and didn't find a whole lot.

I'm currently working on covering the interior plastics and sun visors with some nice high grade vinyl. I got sick of my doors and kick panels and dash being dark and the rest being that light gray, but no pics of that yet. I only am about half done, and its slow going.

Re: Best Appearance Mods

The one I linked may be an aftermarket gauge cluster, but to swap out the L.E.D.'s is really easy, in the tech section of thirdgen.org there is a write up on how to do, also search and there is a great thread with same info with links to buy the individual bulbs, it costs like 20-40$ for all the bulbs you need.

And i'm almost done sanding the squares out of my shift plate, should have some pics of it installed with a new shift boot in a few days, it should look awesome.
I would also like to know this. I looked at the wiring diagram and hooked up the button light wire but only the light around the volume **** lights up. This is on the newer style delco theftlock cd player.

Perforated leather boot,shifter,e-brk.Waiting on my steering wheel, redid my door panels too.
Hand stitched, not perfect, but good enough!

Ebay cheapies, slightly modified.

Re: Best Appearance Mods

I'm currently installing a 4th gen dash and console, but a new carpet (badly needed in my case) can make a huge difference. 4th gen seats are a good simple swap as well that can freshen things up a bit.
