Steering Column exchange

I am needing a steering column for my 1983 Trans Am Daytona Pace Car. Someone stole the car and destroyed the column. Now my windshield wipers work sometimes and not others (like in the rain). The headlights won't go to bright and the top of the shaft where the steering wheel mounts is mushroomed. What years are compatable? The local salvage yards say 1982 and 1983 only due to the pulse wipers and cruise. Any help?

Re: Steering Column exchange

Well, i just replaced my Steering Column in my 1982 Sport Coupe (Camaro) with one from a 1984 Camaro. Everything seemed to go well EXCEPT for the Wipers. the wipers wouldn't work. The plugs were the same and everything. I thought the switch might be bad but i didn't look forward to taking that column apart again. I got under there with a Test light and clipped the ground onto the column mount. I touched each wire with the light and saw that the wipers actually came on!! Of course, the light lit too, but i looked a little closer. Where the Connectors were the same, the wires were in different positions. I looked for an OEM kit to make the installation look good, but after going to the dealership and looking online i was unable to find a solution. My Final solution: I clipped off the connector from the Column side (At least the Harness would be intact). and crimped all the wires to the connector of the old Column in the proper positions. The result was that the wipers work, but only on High. I need to work on it some more to make it better. I hope this helped a bit. If you're ambitious, you could go into this with your eyes open and wire the old switch into your new column right off the bat. that way you wouldn't have the same problem. i'm sure that the old switch would fit on the new column. If you're unsure about ignition, you could also swap that over. The Column it's self is mechanically Similar from what i saw. They just like to switch the wiring around for some reason.
