1988 Shifter **** Removal?

I have the stock shifter ****, its the funny looking one, not the ball. The car is an automatic. Can someone tell me how to remove that and to put like a different one on, like from pepboys, but it has that button in the middle, how do i bypass that? and does anyone know how I can just put a "T-Handle" **** on? like from a hurst shifter onto the stock shifter stem????? Thank you

With the engine off, put the shifter into 1st gear. If you feel the front down low, on the ****, you'll feel a slot. Inside tat slot is a U-shaped clip. Pull that out, need small needle nose pliers or tweezers (but probably too tight for tweezers) to pull it out. **** slides up & off after the clip is out.
