Is ther a certain way or " secret " to removing headliner material?

I got a few small areas peeled back,but the backr board stuff is
coming off with it in layers!!
It must have been recovered recently,because it's sticking like it
doesn't want to come off!!
I was planning on 'glassing the top, & fixing the broke corner, then
getting it recovered.

Any help,advice,or booing is wanted!!!

 

Paint scraper and alot of patience. just take off the green stuff, leave the yellow board.

 

That's what concerns me!! It's peeling off in 2 & 3 layers of backer
material!!
Is that ok??

 

No it's not ok. The new headliner will show every wave where the backer board was removed. You really want the board as smooth as possible. Listen to some of these guys that have done it. I recently saw one done that had some areas where the backing board came off with the original fabric. The recovered board was not as smooth as the original because of the uneven backer board now.

 

Today while I was looking at ways to remove the material, I saw where a guy was doing a Jag 'liner. He used an adhesive remover solvent. BINGO!!!
I had some 3M stuff.

I started out using it verrry sparingly until I found what worked for me-- then went about it that way.
In all, it took about 30-40 mins, and it's off!!
That was better than " pull & pray " as I pulled, scraped, pried & whinced!!
No more backing material than just a very thin piece every once in a while!! I did it this way since the adhesive was extremely tough & tacky, & wanting to seperate the layers.
I wouldn't recommend it if someone's is coming off without issues I faced.

***NOTE***
IF someone does it this way--
Please use some chemicle-resistant nitrile type gloves, a very well ventilated area, & test in a small indescrete area!!
You should only wet the area enough to soak in, then gently rub the area for a min or 2, the carefully lift the material. If that wasn't enough to release, use a Little more, etc. til you find what works for you!!
Leave in the fresh air to dry--Ensure the backer material is dry before recovering!!

Ours will be sitting for about a week before the re-cover-- the guy is going on vacation...BOOOO!!! LOL

 

Wow, I was fortunate with mine which I just put back in last nite. Mine came off with little trouble and when I had the material off, all that was left was the foam backing which I took my shop vac with a brush attachment and I had a clean backer board. I took my board, visors and sail panels to a local guy for redoing and it is beautiful. I repainted the plastic whicle I had it apart, put some sound deadening material with foil top on, just finished tonite before heading out to the local cruise. Looks like new again.

 

mine was pretty easy-just used a soft wire brush to
remove all the bad foam-it was trying to delaminate
around the seat belt openings,so had to be careful
around those areas

 

It’s really easy job to do....just don’t over think it, just make sure you get the shitty old glue off rub it with your hand vacuum it up, or lint roller. And any repairs to do on the headliner do it on the top side....The fabric has a thin layer of foam so when you spray the glue and lay the fabric it will look fresh as ever.
