Help With Hatch Motor

I did a few searches but came up with no hits on these message boards. I need help fixing my electronic hatch. I have a 90GTA. I actually replaced my old one with one from a 89GTA. But my luck went from bad to worse. B/c when I put in the "new" one, it did the same thing, then many years later it stopped working. That is, when I press the hatch release button in the car, I hear a click where the hatch motor is, but no motor action occurs. It just clicks. Then when I put the hatch down, the mechanism doesn't catch the lid unless I slam it down. Also, no motor action occurs as the lid comes to rest. Does it sound like the motor is burned out? One thing I noticed, there is a black plastic box (motor relay?) looking thing underneath the hatch motor assembly and I did notice it was very hot. I thought that was a bit odd. Any instructions on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Help With Hatch Motor

many things can be wrong with your hatch pull-down unit. Look at the Tech article I wrote on TGO on repairing your hatch pull-down unit. It could ba as simple as your motor needs to be re-set. That is done by reaching in and pressing on the striker-sensing switch. Follow the tech article and see if the clear plastic hatch motor housing is cracked or broken. Check that the guides are in good shape. The guides are important because they keep the latch portion of the pull-down properly aligned with the hatch hook. Also if the guides are damaged it can cause the latch portion to jamb as it raises or lowers. If not aligned properly the gear nut can be damaged too. All the items to repair your hatch pull-down unit are available either individually or as a kit. I also sell re-manufactured pull-down units which include a 1yr warranty. Check my web site for the items you'll need to repair your pull-down unit.
