Installing digital gauges in an 84 TA

I've pretty much determined that I need to replace my instrument cluster, as both the oil pressure and oil temperature gauges are both no longer working. Plus, the speedometer has a slight flutter, and I'm not 100% sure that it's properly calibrated anymore. -Not to mention it only goes up to 85mph.

I found someone locally who has a digital instrument cluster, he has it described as an "8-305 (5.0L), TBI cluster"

Even though it's not accurate to my model year, I do like the idea of digital gauges. Would I be able to install this instrument cluster into my 84 TA? I know it probably wouldn't be a straight-across install... if possible, what would it take for parts and equipment to install the instrument cluster?

Re: Installing digital gauges in an 84 TA

Your sure your gauges are at fault? 99% of the problems associated with oil pressure and coolant temperature are because of failed senders, not the gauge itself.

Likewise, a "fluttering" speedo is a sign of a dry (or failing) speedo cable, not the gauge.

Even if you want to upgrade your gauges, it sounds like you've got some other issues to sort out first.

As for digital gauges, I'm not aware of anybody that makes a drop-in kit for your car, though I'm sure Dakota Digital could make one if you have deep enough pockets. Your best bet is probably to buy individual round gauges and fabricate your own panel to mount them to, just like you'd do with analog gauges.

But get your senders working first.

The gauge cluster is out of an 88 GTA, not an aftermarket kit. I'll look into seeing if the senders are working properly, but I'd still like to change my dash to a digital one.

But back to my original question: is it possible to install an 88 GTA digital instrument panel into an 84 T/A, and if so, what would it take?

Well the answer to any question like yours is yes, if you have enough money. But in all seriousness yes it can be done however from what I understand it is not a straightforward swap you'll need to swap dash harnesses and add some other sensors with obviously some other wiring involved there. I would try to get EVERYTHING from the car that the guy is selling, I believe they only offered these dashes for a couple of years so I would imagine finding individual pieces could be tough. Another thing to be concerned about would be that to my knowledge the firebird t/a changed to electronic speedos in 1987 and since you have a mechanical speedo you're gonna have to convert to an electronic one.

I have a Camaro so I don't know a whole lot about this but I know people on here have done it so I would try a search and if you do this I would pick up a service manual for your car and an 88 trans am so you have all the wiring diagrams.
