What the hell does this do??

Hey guys,

This may sound like a dumb question to a lot of you, but I was wondering what the random door on the passenger side under the dashboard is? When you open and close the throttle there is a random door about a foot and a half under the dashpad that pops open and shut. You can hear the door opening and shutting and I would like to know what purpose it serves? Thanks in advance guys!

sounds like part of the HCAV system. It is, i believe, cable operated form the HVAC controls on the dash. It may be disconnected, loose, or improperly hooked up.

You've got a vacuum leak somewhere.

Re: What the hell does this do??

Or you are missing the vacuum orb...or the hose to the orb is leaking/busted. Sounds like when you open the throttle and vac drops, the door is flapping, then when you let off, and vac is at its highest, its slamming shut again.

Weird thats its doing that, because I dont have my orb hooked up right now, and mine doesnt do it. Always thought there was a buffer built in. You might also be missing a check valve in the system. Pretty sure I still have one of those installed which might be why mine doesnt do it...

Re: What the hell does this do??

I am definitely missing the vaccum orb, It was involved in what looks like a mini fire in the engine bay,( HVAC harnesses are a little on the melted side) The whole system is a mess. The blower motor wouldn't work so when I took it out of the aftermarket HVAC system that was installed, cracking the cheap *** plastic housing that was all around it, I found about 10 handfuls worth of insulation in the squirel cage and the surrounding area. Ill look around for an HVAC diagram for the 2.8 in the mean time to see if I can repair it, if anyone has a quick link to one I would appreciate it. Thanks for the replies!

Shoot me a PM with what kind of diagram you're looking for and I'll see what I can help you with. As for that door, that would be the recirculating air inlet door to the blower, which should only open with the control head set to the MAX position. If it's not holding closed, you have a problem with the vacuum motor.
