Stock Steering Wheel re-installation
Just a couple quick questions if someone can help me out. I removed a Grant GT steering wheel from the car that the previous owner installed. I reinstalled a stock, leather wrap, Camaro steering wheel with the round horn pad today. I also replaced the broken turn signal cancel cam.
I'm wondering though... should the wheel go all the way down onto the center splined shaft or will it tighten up/wedge itself before? I know I lined the splines up from the column to the wheel perfectly so there is no doubt in my mind that it isn't binding.
I wanted to keep wrenching it down to see if it would go any further, but I stopped myself and only torqued the retaining nut down to 30ft lbs.
Also, I am thinking of using a lock washer behind the retaining nut. Are there any pros or cons of doing that?
I can provide pics if needed for clarification. Does anyone have pics of their column and steering wheel I could see for reference?
Thanks for any and all help.

The stock set-up already uses a lock washer on the nut.So i would go that route. The nut should also snug the hub down the last few centimeters.I dont remember by how much, but there is around 3/16 gap between the plastic cover on the back of the wheel & the column if its on all the way.

Re: Stock Steering Wheel re-installation
My car didn't have a lock washer, but rather an odd little clip (Retainer, Strg Whl Nut p/n 419454) which goes on top of the tightened nut.

Re: Stock Steering Wheel re-installation
Cool, thanks 84 1LE, I was kind of wondering what the gap should be between the plastic shroud on the back of the wheel and the column, so I'll have to check it.
I was checking the column layout in my GM shop manual and it shows the odd retaining clip that you're talking about James. Instead of using the stock retaining clip I bought a 5/8 lock washer that I'm going to put behind the retaining nut.
Also do you guys know if the rear plastic shroud on the back of the wheel is not perfectly level and warp over the years, the reason I ask is because now that the wheel is installed the gap from the shroud to the column is wider on one side.

Re: Stock Steering Wheel re-installation
Cool, thanks for the replies and info. I ended up putting the 5/8" lock washer behind the retaining nut and I think it's going to work out pretty good. Now all that's left is to find a nice horn cap and new horn wire! Any suggestions on where I can find the horn wire? I found this one on Ebay, but I'm not sure if it will work!

Don't think that'll work.Stock piece has a plastic tube on the spring end.

The plastic piece should already be in place. Here's another choice:
