90-92 Gauge cluster work in older models?
90-92 Gauge cluster work in older models?
Quick question. Restoring a 91 Z28. I have the correct dash and cluster but the dash guts of an 82. Will the 82 plugs run the newer gauge cluster> they plug in and fit but without power at the moment I'm not sure if it will even work. thanks!! Adam

Weren't the speedos on earlier models cable driven? I think you'll need speedo wiring at least, don't know about the rest. Alot is going to depend on what you have for wiring - was the 1982 an idiot light dash or guages?

Yeah I figured out the answer. 90-92 had electric speedo and tach. I'm actually excited now cuz I ordered the Hawks Autometer conversion with gauges to work with the 82 Mechanical set-up. I think that's the best solution. Now I have a 92 110mph gauge cluster brand new with 0 miles that I paid a small fortune for that I gotta get rid of!

I believe you're going to have to swap more than just the physical gauges to make it all work. The dashes are a different design around the gauge bezels. Seems like a hell of a lot of work for not a lot of gain - I think I'd much rather have an Autometer filled-dash.

Well the 91 cluster won't work in anything earlier than a 90 without changing wiring and the computer because 90-92 used electrical gauges and prior to 90 thyey were mechanical. My situation is I have a 91 but used the dash wiring from an 82 in a resto project so I have the Hawks Autometer kit with corresponding mechanical gauges for the 82 wiring. And I have no clue how to hook these up.
