91 firebird need new Steering column. Question about vats key code
I have a base model 1991 pontiac firebird. EARLY INFO: I recently swapped my 3.1L with a 5.7L so even though it has a v8 it came with the base model goodies which wasn't all that bad since it game with 3.42 gears.
Okay I was told that my steering column need to be replaced, which it does. I know that any third gen steering column may fit properly, especially the 90-92 models. The question is how will I get it to work? Can I transfer over my old ignition key pin code over to the new steering column? Or if I go pull a new column out of a salvage yard, will they supply me with the correct key that will allow the car to crank?
I need some information so that I can go ahead and make a decision. Thanks!

Re: 91 firebird need new Steering column. Question about vats key code
You need to find out the resistance value of the key you have now . Can be done with an ohm meter or dealer parts dept. can read it. Then just have a duplicate key made from the one that works the ignition lock in the new column with a blank that has the same resistance value. Make sure you connect the connector at the base of the column that joins the wiring in the new column to your vats module. Column only has wiring in it. The VATS and resistance value that operates it stays with the car

If they'll give you a key that fits the new column, just make sure it is a key that has the hole for the resistor chip. Swap your current chip into the new key & you should be good to go!

The above 2 replies assume that you get another column that is 1990 - 1992. If you get an older column, then either:
1) you'll need to remove the ignition cylinder (key cylinder) from the older column, and swap in a VATS key cylinder (like the one you have), and run wires to your VATS module wires down through the column
or
2) Just bypass the VATS by using the appropriate resistors and connecting between the VATS wires on the dash side.
