Cracked steering collar has come off... ideas?
Cracked steering collar has come off... ideas?
1992 Camaro RS
I bought the car with a cracked plastic steering collar (and some marks in the paint around the window, go figure) but all the paperwork was in line, etc.
Now its cracked and fallen off, revealing the ignition rods and all that... which are wobbling around without the collar guides in there... causing me some obvious dilemmas.
This must have happened to others.
Can I get a replacement for this, and if so can I get it on there without disassembling the whole column?? Anyone have any clever solutions?

You'd have to pull the steering wheel to replace - you'll need a steering wheel puller - "free rental" at Advance/AZ. You have an airbag, so you need to ...
1) remove the airbag fuse (think it's marked SRS)
2) disconnect the yellow SRS wire under the steering column
3) remove the airbag from wheel (4 screws in back of steering wheel)
4) disconnect airbag connector under the air bag
Best thing I can think of is ebay, Thirdgen Ranch, Hawks, or local JY for a replacement

There are some anti-theft devices that are made to go over the original one that is cracked/missing, but you need to replace the coller first. They are not expensive new and thats the way I would go. You should be able to get that at your local GM dealer.

Is this the piece you are talking about?

This is the 82-89 one, though. They probably have the 90-92 style as well.
