88-91 and 91-92 rear hatch pull down interchangeable?

The mid 91-92 rear hatch pull down unit looks like a better set up, compared to the older ones.

Made me wonder if any modifications are required to replace the 88-91 complete rear hatch pull down unit with the later 91-92 unit?

Complete units should interchange with no problems. Even alot of the internals are the same, but not everything - so save what you have as parts for what you get (I have 2-3 units for parts, they are different than my working unit, but gears and such inside are the same).

The 1992 pull down assemblies are totally different than all the other ones. They're much smaller, the bolt holes to mount them won't reach the holes on the trunk. The wiring is different too, although that could probably be overcome by switching out the tail light harness for a 1992 harness, which disconnects right by the rear glove box. I have a couple of older units and two of the '92 units, if I can remember I'll put them side by side and get a picture to show you how different they are, maybe this weekend.

I was looking at the pics on top-downsolutions.com, the mounting holes do look different.

Hmmm - I never tried to install one of my 'other' type units before, I just (wrongly) assumed that the body would be stamped the same, and thus the units would interchange (at least bolt up). My bad - sorry!

Re: 88-91 and 91-92 rear hatch pull down interchangeable?

I don't mean to jack the thread or anything but this thread seems the closest to my issue.

I started with an 88 camaro and am swapping all my wiring into a 91 RS. It looks like it is all the same but once I got to the hatch I noticed there is a seperate little harness for that back section (my 88 has a different type of connector right beside the driver's side rear seat) So my question is basicly, how do I get my wiring to work with the 91 hatch motor?

Re: 88-91 and 91-92 rear hatch pull down interchangeable?

To add to what I just said.. I tried to use my old motor but realized the mounting points are slightly different and the 88 motor is much bigger than the 91.

So any suggestions on what I can do to make it work would be great.

I'd like to avoid cutting wires and splicing but if that is what I have to do then I can do that as long as you guys can give me the right information
