1991 Firebird Rear Hatch

Hey,
So i opened my trunk to take out my t-tops after driving and now the motor isnt coming up, so i cant close my hatch, didnt have a meter on me and its not parked at home so i did some examinations anyway.
The metal unit isnt all the way up, cant tell if its all the way down but the tan coloured plastic has a bit of a gap to the top on the rungs.
I pressd the black switch and nothing happened, I also tried inside with the other switch.
After taking the plastic covering off I have noticed the relay is unusually warm, should this be the case? (Could explain why i've been having a few battery issues)
Also the rear boot light isnt on, is this all on the same system?
Anyone have any suggestions on how I can begin to diagnose the problem?
I intend to head back round with some testing stuff tomorrow.

Thanks,
Mike

Test your relay. Sounds like an energized coil where the switch is stuck open.

There are two relays, one buried under the center console, the other in the rear behind the plastic. Both available at Advance auto - one called hatch extend relay, the other look up Horn Relay (this is the one under the console).

Do a about hatch nmotors and issues - there's about 100 threads on the hatch motor issues in the last 60 days.

The first relay might be in the dash -- remember, Firebirds had the hatch release switch located on the dash, not on the center console like Camaros.
