I need to swap the upper console in my 88 GTA. The old one has a perfect ashtray lid but the replacement doesn't. Has anyone managed to swap these and how difficult is it to remove and install without breaking it?

I've found multiple threads for how to do it with a Camaro but the mechanism isn't the same on a Firebird so I'm looking for advice.

 

i just pulled my console out last week on the TA, and my lid is broken (kinda) and it looked like it would come out pretty easy with the right touch (i didnt inspect mine as much as i should have, since i need the whole shift plate anyways) but it looked like if you jimmy out the spring, it has 2 little round dingers that hold on the track for open/closing smoothness. so a certain amount of 'open-ness' and the right wiggling, should slide out. i could be wrong, but i remember i took a look at mine since it takes some effort to pop mine open, and check for what the malfunction was (broken track). but didnt check for removal since i need the whole plate. and if you have an extra track after your swap, i need the one on the driver side
