Headlight Switch ****: HOW to remove??

1992 Camaro Z28

Alright I tried removing the headlight switch **** and had broke the clip inside as I was trying to get my finger behind the large black cover that covers the instrument panel.

I had to buy another **** but now I obviously don't want to break it the next time I have to remove it.

I read that there is a button on the switch itself which I can see ONCE the **** is off. I also read that you can remove the foglight cover and use a rod or screwdriver end to reach in and push the button. HOWEVER what if you HAVE a foglight switch? That doesn't work because the foglight switch is in the way and the screws are on the INSIDE so you can't remove it. The button is on the BOTTOM of the switch so how can you remove the rod w/ the ****???

Pnce you take off the panel around the gauges, you might be able to reach in there from the rigth sdie of the switch with something. You have to pull the **** out (lights on) then push the button while pulling. It took me a while to figure it out too...

Re: Headlight Switch ****: HOW to remove??

disconnect the battery

lay on your back on the seat with your feet to the rear and your head under the dash. Pull the **** and release the button with a screwdriver.

If you need a new one, go to the boneyard and look in 80's models caprice' or impalas and not just camaros

THere is a button on the switch, inside behind the dash - it releases the **** with the rod attached to it. To get to it, remove the underdash panel (not the foglight switch), and look up under with a flashlight. It's normally solver, looks like a button with a spring under it. Sometimes it rusts from humidity and won't look silver anymore.

Re: Headlight Switch ****: HOW to remove??

Anybody have any other tricks to getting the rod out? I'm pushing the button but the rod is not releasing. I pulled hard enough that the **** came off but the rod won't budge. The button moves freely, rod won't move.

Nevermind. Just had to pull the crap out of it with some vice grips. Naturally the black piece that screws in to hold the switch in place broke in the process though.

A bit late for you, but from memory(trusting THAT less and less these days...) you have to pull the rod out as far as it will go, THEN hold down the button and slide it out...

Re: Headlight Switch ****: HOW to remove??

I know this is old, but if someone else is doing it. I have the headlight switch along with a foglamp switch. Remove the torx screws holding the headlight plate in place and disconnect the connector going to the foglamp switch.

Pull out the headlight **** all the way and rotate headlight plate as far up as it will go so its out of the way. If you look inside, at the bottom of the switch, you will see what looks like a silver screw on the bottom of the switch. I got a cheap set of files the other day and they are perfect for creating a lever to push the switch up, leaning against the bottom of the headlight switch bucket.

It took a few tries to get the catch to release, but it popped right out. Pop the replacement in and you are good to go.

I couldn't see anything from the bottom underneath the steering column.
