Installing Carpet - start in the front or back?

Hello All,

My new carpet is freshly stretched and scotchguarded and ready to be installed. I used the old factory one for a template and am wondering, from those who have installed it before, which is the best place to start?

Meaning, do I start at the front firewall/footwell area and work back toward the hatch or should I start in the rear passenger area and work upward? Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Installing Carpet - start in the front or back?

I don't think it really matters. I started at the front, and didn't do any cutting until after it was in the car. Mine had the console cutout already done, but I still had to cut it some more. The hardest part for me was the seatbelt holes, the padding under there is really tough to cut, and if you don't get enough of it out it will wrap around the seatbelt screws when you put them back in.

Also, there is a metal rod that comes from the e-brake, I was sure that my console would cover it, so I trimmed my carpet to go under it. Turned out the console does not cover it, so I had to stitch a piece a carpet to hide it.

Fitted a few and starting from front seems best method. I usually i find the rear needs the most trimming

Got to start from the front as the rear carpet partially overlaps the larger carpet behind the rear seats .

Start from the front.I found out the hard way and started from the back.Turns out when I got to the front I had to bend and twist the carpet to get the molded sections on the drivers side into position

I started at the front, used some bags of lead shot to hold it in place and mold it to the recessses while the glue dried. Be real gentle with a heat gun if you use one to help shape the carpet, this new stuff melts at a real low temperature!

Ya know, I didn't even think about glueing it down, I just laid mine in there. It seems to be staying put though.

Re: Installing Carpet - start in the front or back?

Thank you all for your responses so far. I started at the front and I'm about 75% done. Surprisingly, the factory carpet was a much better quality/design. Good thing I used deadener since the factory carpet's rubber backing was so much thicker. The thickness held the countours better as well.

I bought mine through an internet forum, brand new, for only $125 - shipping included - so I can't really complain. But if anyone reading this thread is contemplating replacing their carpet, spend the extra money to get the best quality you can and splurge for as many pre-cuts as you can. Mine came with none and even though I laid the old carpet on top to make a template, because of the original was so well molded (as described above) it will be very hard to duplicate, exactly, the cuts.

The center console area wasn't too bad, but the rear seat cutouts are a hassle; not only do you have to do it right to the get the seat to bolt in and sit comfortably, you will have to deal with trimming a lot excess to get a better contour (which is probably why some have mentioned using glue).

Just used a little spray adhesive in the front foot wells, other than that, as you said it pretty much stays put by itself.
