Speedo Cable Squeaks
Speedo Cable Squeaks
I'm trying to gain access to the speedo cable because it squeaks on me and I figured I'd just throw some WD-40 on it or something. But I can't seem to get the cluster apart. All the gauges came out with the exception of the speedometer. I took the two flat blade screws off the front but the needle wont pop off. Anyone know how to gain access to the speedo cable behind the speedometer?
Thanks!
Thanks!
Re: Speedo Cable Squeaks
Okay, update. I got the Speedometer off. (Just a tug and the needle pops off). Now, I'm trying to figure out how to get the big plastic bezel out. I found the two hidden nut-shaped clips closer to the bottom, but there's something that needs to be disconnected behind where the speedometer sits. It's the speedometer cable housing thing that I cant figure out how to disconnect from the white bezel thing. Anyone know what I'm talking about here?

Welcome to TGO, beckler.
Listing the year, make, model, engine, trans, etc. is always helpful. If you have a Camaro, take note. If you'd removed two speed nuts and popped the cable at the rear of the speedo head, you could have removed the entire cluster and saved yourself considerable time/effort. The following thread will provide some instructions:

Re: Speedo Cable Squeaks
Thanks for the reply. I'm having a hard time understanding how to disengage this clip. Your saying to drop the entire lower part of the dash? Or just that small section that's held in by 5 screws and is about a foot wide? Is there maybe another pic of this clip I have to disengage? My biggest worry is re-securing the clip after installation.
Re: Speedo Cable Squeaks
Alright, I tried every which way to squirm under the dash board to find this thing and I cannot see anything further than an amazing slue of wires under there. I have an aftermarket alarm in the car so I'm sure that's what all the wires are for. If I just disconnect the cable from the transmission, could that give me slack to pull the cluster a few inches forward and slip my hand back there and disconnect this thing?

Not really. Reaching up from underneath is the way to do it. You can get to it that way, just have to figure out how the first time.

Yes you can. Start sticking your hand up there and feeling around.

Trace the speedo cable from where it comes through the firewall to the rear of the speedo.

I cant find this thing anywhere. I've tried sticking my hand up through the bottom of the dash for over an hour. I'll see if I can take pics to show what I'm talking about here.

Just to make sure: A Camaro, 82-89, has a mechanical-driven speedo (cable). 90+ doesn't. Again, listing your car's year, make, model, engine, trans, and so on is helpful.
If your car has a cable, you should see it coming though the firewall.

Re: Speedo Cable Squeaks
Okay, I found the cable. Its tighter than a nun's ........... on sunday down there because (I'm not sure if it's factory or aftermarket) there's a wire harness that's the thickness of my wrist that's directly in the path of the cable. I barely feel the cable as it goes into the cluster. There's barely enough room to sneak my hand up the cable. I can't reach my hand up any further than where the black-plastic coated cable turns into a hard white plastic. (If that makes any sense). And I certainly can't feel any sort of disengage for the cable.
