Steering Column R&R
Steering Column R&R
I just removed the steering column from my car. It's going out for a rebuild. Getting the base of the column out of the intermediate shaft wasn't too easy. I had to tap it out with a screw driver. I'm not sure getting it back in will be cake walk. There is no room to work, and I know it's not going to slide in easily. Seems it will need persuasion to go into the intermediate shaft, but then the intermediate shaft will slide downwards towards the steering box. Has anyone done this before?
Is there a way to seat the column into the intermediate shaft or does it need to be forced in there?

It's not really that hard, maybe I got lucky or something, but when I slid the shaft through the firewall it went right into the knuckle.Take your time,It'll workout.

All you have to do is remove the one bolt off of the shaft just under the brake booster and three from the firewall under the dash, then the four that holds the column to the dash, then the wiring.
Re: Steering Column R&R
I'm actually not sure, see I bought the car after it had been sitting three years out in the rain and snow due to a car theif ruining the front of the stearing colum and the guys "mechanic" freind doing more harm then good.through out that time I don't know who damaged the knuckle but when we tried to put the new stearing column it wouldn't go in.we reached inside the part where the column goes in an there was a little peace of metal The size of a nickel bounceing around inside.it might have Been the mechanic or it might have been us(most likely us) because we pulled it preety hard tring to get it out.either way it was 45 dollars from the junkyard for everything in the stearing column from the stearing wheel to the gear box.so before you put the new column. Just reach into the part part where the stearing column goes into the knuckle and check if everything is still tight and you should be good. I doubt your car is as abused as this one
