Re: FREE cupholder!
used marine battery padding and cut it to fit the bottom and sides inside the can, looks good and I pimered and paited it black before I put the padding in it, i just used adhesive spray and it sticks very strong. the can is perfect size and the padding makes it quiet and perfect for bottles and phones.

Re: FREE cupholder!
it sticks up about an inch. the top lip is wraped in HD electrical tape (dad works construstion, its $60 a roll haha but free to us HEHE), but you cant tell it looks like leather-
- I did not remove the console.
I just removed the shifter plate, then pushed the wiring to the side with a screwdriver while i drilled out the hole with a HOLE SAW
- after that i used a diamond bit to grind it to size (marked it with a pencel) - it was a tight fit, be careful had to put it in at an angle and twist. No glue or anything its stury enough its not coming out

Re: FREE cupholder!
I saw them today, Did you measure it? the ones I saw on ebay were either too small 2 somthin" and the other ones are over 4" witch is a problem as the console lid and switches are 3.5" apart
Re: FREE cupholder!
I see the price of unmolested consoles going up after all of these cup holders! I don't understand the thought process of you guys that cut up a car to install crap and think it's good. You installed a Nev'r Dull can? You're kidding right? There are so many better options out there if you just had to have a cup holder in a car that was designed without one! And people wonder why third gen owners get called "trailer trash". The proper way to add something and call it a modification is to make the mod look like it was done by the factory. Thanks for helping increase the value of my car!
Re: FREE cupholder!
Normally I'd agree with Scott. But some goober already spilled crazy glue on mine in that spot, trying to fix the rearview mirror! There was glue on the mirror, the console and the carpet! So I'll hide the damage with a cupholder until I can find a mint one. It's a vert so it only has the 2 window switches.

I do agree that hack kids who cut stuff up should at least have some shame and not post pictures.

Re: FREE cupholder!
Could have sworn hot rodders started off using what they had no matter what it was? I i could be wrong! And I didnt molest the car. Its actually decent looking, way better than the ones that stick way up. Btw, I wanted it for my cell phone and other I i take out of my pockets when I drive. Its also lightweight metal, not plastic that will squeak and eventually crack and I primer and painted it and clear coated it so it wont rust. I in no way took from the VALUE of the car. Trailer trash would be a gutted rust bucket on a k5 frame. And if you must know that area was ruined my the po anyways
Re: FREE cupholder!
I don't know if I would put cup holders in the same league as what hot rodders did to flat head Fords in the 1950s. Cup holders in 3rd gens seem to elicit vitriol like dubs do. If the guy showed some creativity in chopping up his console because he needed a cup holder then more power to him. If it looks good then its probably alright. On the other hand if he had decided to put some clown rims on a 3rd gen, that would be different thing entirely.

Ha never gonna see me cut up my console just to have a spot to place my drink.
I have seen way better mods for cupholders then people doing similar things as this. Look them up.

Re: FREE cupholder!
I agree that using a can, wrapped in electrical tape and painted is low end! Personally I dont drink any beverages in my car so I have no need for a cupholder. IF I was to install one I would buy a marine one for $5-10. which would look correct.
Here is a chrome one on ebay for $9 but you can buy black plastic ones at your local west marine store for about $5

Re: FREE cupholder!
i see too many people putting cup holders in that spot, and i just dont get it...why would you want a drink under your arm?? why not install one next to you, or in front of you, not under you. although i have a perfect spot for a drink of just about any size, i put mine between me and the console while the seat belt hugs it. never notice its there and never spills. but im not fat dude that takes up all the seat room either...

Re: FREE cupholder!
Installed one in my IROC. I take great pride in my car and did my best to keep it appearing like a stock looking piece. It sits flush with the top, is the same color, and is nice and smooth. I installed one not for the purpose of drinks, but for my cell phone, loose change, keys, etc. If a sealed drink makes it into there once in awhile, thats fine by me.

Re: FREE cupholder!
If someone takes the time to make it look nice, I say nice addition. If you driving an auto then its not really in the way at all. The way I drive, having a bottle sitting there gives me something to hold while being in a natural position, works for me, maybe not others. The only issue I really see is if your driving a manual is not to have anything bigger then a twenty oz bottle. From a minor safety issue, it secures the drink or whatever so its not tucked between your legs or between the console any your leg where it can slip off and get between the pedals. The ones that took the time and made it look nice it is a nice benefit other then jamming a bottle somewhere or using on of those window jobbies.

Re: FREE cupholder!
I think how you modified your console to add the cupholder looks good/presentable and well done.
I've been looking into repairing three small holes in my console where the PO screwed some pos cupholder onto the console. The first mod I made to my car was removing that pos, lol.
With that being said, does anyone have recommendations for repairing plastic holes in the console? I've done numerous searches both here and on the web to no avail!

Re: FREE cupholder!
I like plasmeh's cupholder a lot, the OP's might be nice despite its cobbled nature, but I cant tell from the pictures.
But if i were going to cut a hole in taht spot in my console, I'd be installing an autometer clock to copy the console clock look... I've given up on finding a console clock.

Re: FREE cupholder!
i do my best not to cut my interior if its an original piece, they do make a console lid with a cupholder on it, its ugly as sin, but no cutting is required and you can switch back to a stock lid in seconds,
my solution to not having cupholders was to buy the cupholder wedge from walmart, i have since stopped using that because it was scuffing the side of my console
now my car is strictly a cruiser(atleast for now) and i don't allow drinks that don't use Caps
but im also not against anything an owner wants to do to a car, there are things i severely dislike and i will tell people how i would have done things, but not say they were wrong in doing their way

Re: FREE cupholder!
That's pretty cool.
People need to understand that there's a large majority of us thirdgen-ers who don't care if our car doesn't look stock. If we want to cut up our console, why not? Aftermarket steering wheel? Sure. It's not always about the result, but sometimes the process of doing something yourself.
