Speedo swap

My car is an 85 V8 automatic. The speedometer needle broke off shortly after getting the car. I found a V6 car on craigslist being parted. I've yet to find out what year the car is (Waiting to hear from him) I know there are cable driven and electrical driven speedometers, but are the v8 and v6 speedometers the same?

Also. Is there a thread or FAQ page on how to remove the entire speedometer gauge?

The 85, either Camaro or Firebird, should be cable driven. No difference in the speedo heads. I'd swap only the head as some electrical gremlins can crop up when swapping clusters--at least with the Camaros.

If you have a Camaro, check the following link (first post):

Re: Speedo swap

just swapped my 85mph speedo for a 115mph one. It wasnt just an easy swap either... I broke the needle trying to remove it and the 115mph speedo face plate was alilttle rusty. So I used the 85mph needle modified and 85mph face plate with the 115mph speedo mechanical parts. Its not too hard to figure out how to take it apart, just be careful working with 25 year old plastic.
