Replacing Door Locks

Ok so recently I purchased an 84 camaro. When I got it the guy didnt have the keys to the doors so now I have to replace the door locks, so I have a couple of questions. First off, how easy is this? Everything is manual(doors and windows). I bought locks from Autozone and it came with instructions but I'd rather have input from someone who has actually done it. Also, the trunk didnt have a lock so thatll need to be replaced and I bought the trunk lock as well.

Any help would be appreciated

Re: Replacing Door Locks

Nice, another person from Arizona. Hope the car hasn't been overbaked . I have a sister out near there.

Anyways, as for the door locks, pull the inner door panels off with the windows UP (or you won't be able to get at the lock). Remove the door pull handle first and then the latch handle/power lock switch/remote mirror stick trim, followed by the manual window crank lever (if your windows are manual), but leave it on the shaft loose. Roll the window DOWN, and then pry out gently at the bottom of the door panel to release the retaining clips. Push IN on the plastic trim (towards the window) at the top while lifting the panel UP from the bottom. Should pop off sooner or later (don't break the trim). Roll the window back up and peel back the plastic liner at the latch end of the door. It's a bit of a reach, but you should be able to get your arm up in there with a pair of pliers to grab the lock retainer and pull it out. You also need to release the lock rod retainer either by prying it off of the lock rod (plastic clip) or prying it outwards from the lock body (metal PITA clip).

Not quite sure if the hatch lock is the same or not (my lock is different, I'm sure), but you will need to pull off the trim panel at the rear of the car (with the light in it if equipped or the one right on the tail, below the hatch trim piece) and reach around behind the latch assembly to get at the lock retainer. You'll need to pull the cable (if equipped, not quite sure on the slam latches) off of the lock before removing the retaining clip.

Re: Replacing Door Locks

Thanks! It doesnt seem that hard but then again I've never replaced locks on my car doors. As for the trunk/hatch, it doesnt open currently since the lock is completely missing off of it.

Its actually in very good shape for $1200, paint is in good shape but i still plan on painting it

Re: Replacing Door Locks

If the lock on the hatch is completely gone, stick a screwdriver into the middle of the hole and turn it to the right. The latch should unlatch then.

Sounds like a better deal than I got for $1000 (I'm another $8K into mine from where it started ). Once you get these small things fixed.

Re: Replacing Door Locks

Yeah, only a few small things to be replaced. The guy that had it before me was going to make it a pro-stock camaro so it doesnt have AC or a radio or any of that fancy stuff. It does have brand new seats, carpet, etc tho lol. I plan on making it a street/strip car and plan on dropping a 350 in it but thatll be later on
