1982-84 Ashtray Lid Removal

I looked around to see if anybody asked this already, so Im sorry if this is a repeat question, but I dont see a answer for this. I just purchased a new Ashtray lid cover for my 84 Trans Am, my old one separated the plastic top from the metal hinge. But I cant seem to get the old hinge out. I assumed it would just squeeze both ends and pull, but it seems to be harder then that. Do I need to remove the shift top panel to get at it?

If anybody knows how this Ash Tray Lid is removed and installed please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

You need to remove the top console cover. The hinge pivot are rivets that need to be drilled out.

Re: 1982-84 Ashtray Lid Removal

Thanks for quick reply, Im not sure if that is good news or bad news, if the rivets are drilled out I wonder how I even attach the new lid cover since I purchased that NOS in a box, and it has 2 rings only where it must attach to the console, if the rivets are drilled out, I dont know how to put the rivets back in so the new one opens and closes on those rivets. Im almost thinking I should have superglued the plastic back to the metal hinge, or just replace the console itself. Bummer, but thanks for letting me know.
