For the 3rd brake light it may not be that, I have an '86 and the 3rd brake light is powered from the power through the shocks. It is different for different years so check that.

The shocks that hold up the rear hatch have power going though them, that is why they are so expensive. If the wire slips off the tab then the brake lite doesn't work (and the rear defrost would kick on (they share a ground).

I have found a center console. I looked at every wire connector and fuse even the shocks and still no third brake light. Next step is checking for power I just have to find an voltmeter.

One more thing I just thought of, if you have an '86 with the brake light on top of the glass there is one thing that I had to do to get mine to work. It was so many years ago that I had forgotten (I did this 18+ years ago and have not had to redo it yet). I had to wedge some rubber (I used part of an old bike inner tube) under the front edge (under the lens) because the electrical contacts under (and through) the glass are not making contact to the electrical "wire" on the surface of the glass.

I traced all of the wires all the way to to ground. It ended up being the connection for the ground to the chassis on the passenger side. I also cleaned all the connections with brake cleaner and used steel wool on all metal connections. Thanks for your help.
