Steering Column Woes
where to begin...
Lets start with the steering wheel moves in a circle (not like it suppose to) it goes left, right, up, and down laterally.Tore it down, could only get to 2 of the screws (any tricks to get the other two?). Put it all back together, doesn't move as much but now the brights dont work (switch worked before being tightened into the cradle). And when the headlights are turned on the right turn signal light comes on, doesn't blink just on.
Here are a few Qs I have:
1.) what is the secret to get at all 4 of the lower housing bolts to tighten up the steering wheel?
2.) How can I adjust my bright switch so it functions nornmally?
3.) whats the deal with the headlights?
Thanx in advance
Geoff

Re: Steering Column Woes
U dont have to drop the column to tighten the bolts up. But i found if your going to change any switches the require fishing a new wire it easier to take off the brace that holds it in place ,but its simple it should have 2 bolts to the car and 4 into the colunm . i brought my laptop and sat it in the passinger seat and kept rewinding the A-1 auto video . best of luck it is a simple fix ( i spent more time trying to find the pin puller than doin the repair)

Re: Steering Column Woes
Havent gotten around to actually fixing it yet due to work, but something interested has come up. Whenever I go around a corner to sharply the horn honks. Its kinda funny, people look at me weird, but I want to fix it. Ideas as to why it is doing this?

Re: Steering Column Woes
you can keep steering column on when take steering wheel apart
did you take off the plastic cover or did it fall off for turn signals/highbeam switch "directly behind turn signal switch on left side of steering column ? while disassembling the steering wheel... the plastic cover holds the highbeam switch in place removing it and switch can fall out place "plastic part that pushs the rod for highbeam" for the turn signal issue.... just trace your elctrical issue starting with the switch... when its apart... steering wheels is pretty easy to fix and take apart as long you got correct tools also check if lightbulbs are good of course

No amount of screw tightening will fix this. New steering colum time.

Re: Steering Column Woes
What part is that kinda hard to tell from pic ... Just go to junk yard and find good replacement and if its a little loose tighten it up
Re: Steering Column Woes
Google 'cascade crew': one of the guys did an AWESOME write up on breaking down the steering column to tighten the tilt bolts. It is VERY educational!

Re: Steering Column Woes
The above picture is the lower housing, where the tilt knuckle is.
Here is a picture of the lower knuckle that is all broken out.
My father, who used to rebuild these colums for a living says he has NEVER seen one broken out like that.
Got a new column, and intermediate shaft since mine is junk, out of a camaro from the junkyard.
Let the fun begin

Re: Steering Column Woes
to come to think of it ..i had one broke also in my last camaro .. i assume its because how some people break into cars and get the steering to unlock and in the process break it or something its kinda weird ..
shouldnt be too bad to replace just a little fun putting it together

Re: Steering Column Woes
Pulled a colum and Intermediate shaft out of an 82 camaro in the junkyard. Swapped over all the pieces I could(found out the rods are different). works like a champ now. Less than $100 invested.

Re: Steering Column Woes

Re: Steering Column Woes
Install the firewall hardware first,..... then raise the column to the dash housing studs,..... then connect the intermediate shaft.
