Door panel removal with window stuck in up position

Whats the best way to remove door panel with window stuck in up position? Just bought 91 RS and both window motors are shot. Pried and pulled carefully on panel after pulling plastic pieces along bottom and sides of door but not coming loose. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

With a lot of patience..Seriously.
The hang up is the plastic piece at the top. It has tabs that lock into the door, and are a bear to get loose when you can't grab from the window side.
I have had success prying the panel up and out enough that I could see the first tab, then push it out while pulling up. Then repeat this process with the remainder until you can get it to pop free. It is a tedious and frustrating process, but it can be done.

Now, I am sure someone else will come along with a slick method of doing it.

After you remove the arm rest, door lock button etc and pop all the plastic retainers out of the door frame SLIDE the top hard plastic
piece thats attached to the door panel towards the back of the car.
Slide the entire door panel and the hard plastic top piece as ONE
complete assembly!
It will release from the door frame
(even with the window up...though it will be a PIA)

The top plastic piece and door panel are bonded together !!!!!!

The top plastic piece and door panel are bonded together !!!!!!
It cannot slide because of the 2 plastic tabs that fit into 2 square metal tabs of the door down inside the window area.

The plastic is not bonded to the door panel. It is held but metal retainer rings around plastic pegs that protrude from the top plastic piece through the door panel.

Not only have I done this several times before but I also have a spare door with no door panel on it & spare door panels laying around to look at easily.

Until those plastic tabs are released from the door, it will not come out even with everything else loose.

Re: Door panel removal with window stuck in up position

I don't know what year your car is but my 84 the plastic top piece
and the panel are assembled together as one piece.

Sure I could grind off the melted plastic tabs that are on top of the
metal washers that bond the plastic top to the door panel but thats
twice the work and defeats the purpose of removal.

A couple of the plastic tabs on my panel were broken so I just
drilled them out and used pop rivets to replace the melted plastic
tabs/studs and hold the panel assembly together.

Anyhoo.............a couple of the door panel removal threads here
instruct you to either drop the window and release the plastic top
piece from the top along with the panel.

Another instructs you to SLIDE the plastic piece AND the panel as one piece toward the back of the door so the fasteners slide into
the cut out areas of the door frame top so they release the plastic
top................
I think this method would work best with the window up.

Thats how I removed MY 84s door panels and top so I could replace the outer weatherstrip.

Re: Door panel removal with window stuck in up position

Then your 84 must be different from the 84 TA I pulled a pair of doors off of... Those door window sill plates cannot be slid forward and back (the ends are SQUARED OFF in relation to the door). And those "washer" things are called "speed nuts".

OP, you're going to have to get someone to help you as you're going to need someone to push against the outside of the door as you push IN (as in towards the outside of the door) on the window sill as you push the door panel UP from the bottom. It's a PITA but it's doable. You may be able to do it alone but you may not want to risk hurting anything, either the door or fender or anything like that...

Re: Door panel removal with window stuck in up position

Sorry..........
I KNOW the difference between speed nuts and washers!

If you read my post and description you might have noticed that I said
the plastic pegs on the bottom rear of the plastic top piece have WASHERS
over them and the plastic pegs are MELTED over the WASHERS which hold
the door panel and backer board to the plastic top piece.

There are several similar door panel removal threads here using
the same removal method I described to release the door panel.

Remember if you LIFT the bottom of the door panel UP from the
bottom the plastic top EDGES will CLEAR the door ends and SLIDE
forward or backward and release..........................

Sorry i forgot to be LITERAL for the hardachers..............
