oil gague on a V6
Hello all. I'm new with a 1992 Firebird I got for my daughter to take to college, she insteaded opted for the LaBaron convertable. Go figure!
So daddy has kept the bird and plans to do restoration and use it myself.
The oil gauge in this V6 is different than any I've seen. No markings of pressure just a small set of indicators on right side. It works, but I want to use white gauge overlays and they don't have this. Do I need to replace entire set of gauges? Thanks for help.

Not being aware that the 90-92 cars even had the idiot light cluster as an option (if it is indeed the idiot light cluster there will be about 8 smaller circles where the idiot lights are instead of 2 more large circles with gauges), if you indeed have the idiot light cluster, you would need to replace the entire cluster AND the sending unit by the oil filter.

Someone may have done something in the past that "tore off" the marks for the oil pressure gauge. You SHOULD be okay using the gauge overlays or however you plan on changing the gauge face colors.
If you think you might require another cluster or gauge, I have a full V6 120 MPH cluster available.
FYI, the oil pressure gauge on the V6 goes from 0-80 PSI and the pressure should be between 15 and 70 PSI depending on the engine temp, oil thickness, and how worn the engine is. The pressure regulator in the pump is designed to put out 70 PSI maximum. If the gauge needle goes off the scale towards the 80 mark, the sending unit OR the gauge wire between the gauge and the sender have an issue (a lot of senders fail this way, means that the circuit is open).

Re: oil gague on a V6
I've been tearing my v6 outta my 92 bird and reading thru a pontiac service manual for the car. On the wiring schematic, there is a resistor in line (68 ohm iirc). It is taped up and in the conduit right before the bulk head in the engine bay. I didnt realize this when I went to initially rewire my car, and when I went to put power to the dash it pegged out the temp gauge. I think as oil pressure increases in the sender it increases resistance in addition to the resistor. Its only on the v6 models, its quite bizzare to me, I think its just a failure indicator really, because the "oil" idiot light doesn't have a wire leaving the cluster to complete any ground. I hope this helps
